I tested some NEF files from my new d70s, in all of my current programs, other than Nikon's.

Initially, the files would not display properly. All of the shots had a severe blue cast, so the "as shot" WB was obviously not being used. BreezeBrowser reported that it could not open D70s NEFs.

I then ran the D70sHack( found here ) on the NEFs and then tried all of the programs again. This time, all of them worked just as they do on the older d70 files and the "as shot" WB is apparently utilized.

The D70sHack file simply changes the Camera Model field from Nikon D70s to Nikon D70. It is a Windows DOS command line utility, so you Mac users are prolly SOL, unless it will run in an emulator.

Now, I want to ask this guy if he'll do the same thing to break the encryption on the other files to put the proper EXIF info into the proper fields on those files.....

Bill Claff, the writer of the utility I used, has done a lot of work on various files and he says the d70s NEF files are not encrypted. It's just the model name that is goofing up the other programs, apparently because that is the file tag that these programs look at before they start any routines for display of the files.

Nikon didn't do anything really abnormal with the d70s NEFs, AFAICT.

That is nice to hear. As I suspected. Now I feel a bit easier about purchasing a d70s.

Hi! I was actually going to ask this question as my first post on this forum, but since there is a thread for it already, I'll just post here

I just got my D70s last week and shot "quite a few rolls of film" already.
I am using Photoshop CS2 and PS Elements v3 to open the NEFs.
After I downloaded the Adobe Camera Raw 3.1 update from adobe.com, I had no trouble at all opening NEFs.

I am relatively new to digital photography (owning a Canon Powershot A60 for 2 years doesn't count ) so I was wondering what the "big deal" with this encryption is.
Maybe I'm supposed to see something else???
I looked at /printed some pics in Nikon Capture too, and there's "not much" difference between those and the ones printed from PS. BTW, I saw the D70 hack you mentioned but I never tried it. I didn't need to.

So, now I that got the first post out of the way, I qualify for "active newbie", not just "lurking newbie"!

Welcome aboard.

It appears that the WB encryption thing is not going to be a big deal for you because Nikon decided not to implement it in the D70s.

If they had, you probably would not be able to open your images with ACR, and if you could you would have to set your WB manually.

There is probably three different threads on this forum with 6 pages of discussions about this issue regarding the principal of what Nikon has done as well as the technical logistical short term rammification. To best understand what most of us think I would search out those threads, however, I'm not really good with the search function. Good luck.
