Whats the low-down with filter sizing?

I am looking into getting a filter for my kit lens. I understand that the sizing is 67mm but my question concerns lenses I might aquire in the future.
I am looking at the 70-300 lens as my next investment but I understand that this doesn't have a filter thread of 67mm!
Do I have to purchase a seperate filter for every lens I purchase or is there an "all in one" solution to my problem.
Cheers in advance, I know the answer is coming... 5... 4... 3... 2.. 1... GO!

Ed,
There are different sorts of filters, eg UV for protection, coloured filters and polarised. Step down or step up ring can be used with some filters or alternatively some coloured filters offer kits, unfortunately I don't know much about these. Or just buy pro lenses which often take 77mm filters

The 70-300 is 62mm so a step down ring could be used. Inexpensive, available from
http://www.vanbar.com.au probably $10-15

I'll have to look at the next size big lens I get and get a filter for that size and use stepping ring (if required) for the 70-200VR

Is it best to go for the largest size filter (eg the 67mm) and then get adapters for all my other lenses.
I would go for 77mm filters and get converters but to be honest I doubt I will ever be able to afford the mega bucks glass!

I would answer yes Ed to your question, though others may have different opinions
