I've just noticed this article on DPReview.
Microsoft will soon be offering a RAW thumbnail & file viewer as a power tool.

It appears that it will form part of the OS to allow RAW images to be viewed in a way similar to the present Picture & Fax viewer.
Should be avialable for downlaod in the next couple of weeks.

Trev, there is also a fix by Shaun Ivory, a microsoft engineer to do the same. Do a search on his name at DPReview and have it now. I have been using it for six months and it is great. Has also been posted here but cant remember what under.

Glen,

is that programme you mention an alternative to RawShooter Essentials?

I'm finding it so helpful for getting the right range of densities....but wouldn't mind having a play with an alternative.

Actually I think shooting raw saved my bacon on Tuesday, when my flash wasn't fully recharging between shots. And they were group shots....

Yes, Glen - I also use the Shaun Ivory fix. I think I posted in that thread.

What is different about the newly announced Microsoft power tool is that you will be able to view full-size NEFs in Windows Explorer, not just thumbnails.
