I've just noticed something peculiar on my camera.
I was opening some pix I took last night, and found that Nikon View was telling me that they were in colour mode I, sRGB. I thought that this was unusual, because I had previously set the camera to colour mode II, aRGB.

When I checked the camera - sure enough, the custom menu said colour mode II. I further found that changing this setting to I, II, or III made no difference to what Nikon View showed, ie all pix in colour space I.

Also, the camera's numbering sequence has reverted to the format DSC_####, another indication that it is in colour space I.

My only thought is that this may have occurred when updating the firmware.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

This is just a guess...but maybe uploading the firmware resets all the default settings?

Just checking - doing some printing now. I don't see a difference on the monitor.
I'm concerned that whatever setting I put into the camera, no change is indicated by the software when pix are downloaded.

Cricketfan I had the same problem lastnight when shooting a Nankeen Kestrel. All of a sudden my camera was shooting Color Mode I and was in Closest Subject Priority. I then realised I was shooting in Night Portrait mode, caused by an accidental rotation of the dial (wish there was a lock button). So make sure you haven't slipped out of your mode.

I had a similar problem a while back - different cause, same sympton. The camera was saying ModeII but NC and PS was indicating sRGB. After fiddling for ages, I finally just returned the menus to their defaults manually and did a full camera reset to put it all right.

Thanks Matt - I'm going to try that. The pix I printed don't look right to me.
I'll keep you posted.

Come to think of it...some of the shooting modes do have their own default colour space. For instance, the landscape mode will put the camera into colourspace adobe 11sRGB or whatever it's called, in order to saturate or enhance the greens.

Yep, that's true, and I was aware of that.
In any case, I have only been shooting in Manual, S or A.
So far, the reset has made no difference.
Everything that comes off the card says sRGB, regardless of the setting in the camera.

Have you got latest firmware on your camera Trevor. This sounds like an issue listed on the 'fixed' list of the v1.2 fw.

Did you use the reset on the bottom of the camera (not the two button or menu reset)?
Also, when setting colour mode, selecting OK, then when returned to the previous menu, are you scrolling to and selecting"Done" to exit the menus? It is easy to cheat here and half press the shutter release or menu button to exit and lose the change.

I probably should have been a little clearer previously. Argh, three different resets! When I had that problem previously, I returned the colour mode to mode 1 so that the menu was saying the same as what was being output (shouldn't make a difference as a full reset is supposed to return the camera to the factory state, but did it anyway), then did a full reset using the switch on the bottom of the body.

No! Thanks for mentioning - I have only done 2-button reset and menu reset. I'll try it now.
Because this has only occurred since updating firmware to V2.0, I sent an email to Nikon Asia asking if they had any words of wisdom on the matter. I should hear from them directly.

Trevor - I am using the latest firmware for the D70 (Ver 2) and I always use Mode II. I have just checked in NC and PS and my NEFs are showing Mode II as shot.

Does not help you but it does indicate that the version change has not changed my settings.

OPERATOR ERROR! Many thanks to MattC for making sure the simple things were not overlooked. Just goes to show that you can't take anything for granted.
I'm assuming that the firmware update changed the setting to default, which is colour mode I, sRGB.
When I tried to revert to my preferred setting, colour mode II (aRGB), I changed the setting AND EXITED WITHOUT CONFIRMING (by OKing "Done" as Matt posted above.)

Images now showing correct colour space. Thanks to everyone who assisted, but special thanks to MattC for stepping through the problem logically for me.

If the firmware update didn't change it, I don't know how it happened. As evidenced above, I didn't know how to change it in the menu

The only other possibility could be that I somehow pressed the wrong two buttons for formatting the card, and reset everything to default. I can't rule it out!

Same thing happened to me.

I am pretty sure updating the firmware does reset the colour mode.

Many of you will remember this thread, and the help offered quickly and accurately from forum members. I had lots of meaningful answers immediatey, and a complete solution within 24 hours.
At the same time as posting my initial problem, I sent an email to Nikon Asia giving them the details of the problem also. I got an immediate acknowledgement from them, advising that I should have a further response within 72 hours.
Today, 8 DAYS later, I received this by email:
