Insurance

I was thinking about insuring my equipment (d70 and a couple of lenses) against accidents and theft. They are covered by home contents insurance but I was thinking more against dropping it on a concrete floor or have it stolen or damaged. I am by no means a professional or semiprofessional and was wondering what other amatures or semi-pros do in that regard. Is it worth it?

Thanks
Alex

Hi Alex,

I have insured all my camera gear against theft, loss and damage.
I strongly believe that it is worthwhile.
See, if you drop the camera on a concrete floor, rest your backpack full of gear on the waters edge and it goes for a swim, whatever you can think of: it is insured and you DO NOT have to buy new gear.
What would you prefer: no insurance and replace at your own cost ?
I also have extended warranty; I don't want to pay for repairs after one year has gone by.

Thanks, Christian,

Yes, could you advise of the insurer you go with?

Thanks
Alex

Hi ozczecho,

The insurance is through AAMI whom I have home contents insurance with.
Cost: it depends on the sum insured, I would have to go through paperwork to be accurate.
However I believe it is some 300 - 400 $ for the insured value of $10.000
Please be safe and check with your insurer. AAMI also cover the first 30 or 31 day overseas.

Thanks, Christian. It doesn't sound too bad (the premium), but I wonder how much excess would be payable, if any. I'll give CGU (my contents insurer) a call tomorrow.
