Ok let your imagination run for a little while...

A long lost relative has just bequethed you some cash. Lets say $5k or so. Old aunty was a frustrated photographer (died before getting hold of a D70) and has expressly stated that you must spend the money on a photographic trip of a life time.

So where would you go?

Trekking through the swiss alps?
Late afternoon sun in the vineyards of Tuscany?
Antarctica?

Dream on...

Swiss Alps, Himalayas and Antartica would be out, $5k wouldn't be enough. You'd need a fairbit of money for those sort of places I would have thought seeing as $2.5k would be spent on airfare there.

I think you could do Africa on $5k, Nepal, The Fjords, Canada/Alaska love to get some photos of Bald Eagles and Kodiaks (I said Kodiaks not Kodaks .

Easy - $5K - circumnavigate Australia with a side trip to Antarctica. It's too easy to underestimate the awesome diversity and beauty of the continent we live on and you'd be spending less on fares (but if Aus was out - I'd do Africa)

On the weekend I caught the end of a documentary on SBS about 'Truffles' in the Umbria region of Italy. Old weathered towns, hillside and forests, would make fantastics shooting.

You are right Kipper as soon as I posted it I thought $5k won't be enough for a decent overseas trip, though most Australian places would be achievable...

how about $5k for OZ and $10K for overseas...

Australia:
Bungle Bungles
Carnovorn Gorge
Central Australia - Devils Marbles

Overseas:
Anywhere with big mountains - Nepal, European Alps

Having said that I have been to New Zealand's south island about 10 times and love it so, I would probably go back there...

Actually, I think that $5K would do a whole lot better beyond our borders than within them. That's precisely why we're heading to Malaysia for next year's F1GP instead of Melbourne.

Ferinstance, $2K would get me pretty well anywhere within EU, and there's some very inexpensive but quite comfy acccommodations to be found once you're there. I would expect to yield 3 or 4 weeks in Le Cinque Terre or Tuscany for that sort of money, including R/T airfares, provided it was somewhere around the mid-autumn period.

$5k would set me up for a couple of months of travel in OZ or NZ and a couple of weeks of travel further afield. My usual travel accomodation is a small tent, though last year I rented a small house for a while on Stewart Island (far south NZ) and found it to be a great experience and something I will repeat (though I have since bought a house).

10k could be used to buy more

a) time away
b) luxury - accomodation,food,transport options
c) 'adventure' activities (though true adventures can't be bought or sold)
d) destinations

Where would others go if the criteria was restricted to Australian travel only?

There's too many places i'd like to go and not enough money. In Australia next I'd like to go to Broome and the Kimberleys then up to Kakadu and Ayers Rock.

As for overseas, Borneo is quite cheap and you could easily do that for 5K. Anything to see those orangutans. Africa is always a favourite (or maybe obsession) of mine and i'd love to see the gorillas in the wild.

I concur with Nicole. I've been to the Red Centre (pre D70 ) and would love to go back with the dSLR and about 10 CF cards (if not more). Ayers Rock, The Olgas, Katherine Gorge, Kakadu...they are all AMAZING photo opp's. Then I'd travel across to the Kimberleys, Monkey Mia and around WA.....

Ahh, what a dream. Even better, imagine getting paid to do it

I want to photograph a volcano erupting over a 24 hour period. Close, but not too close.

Maybe there will be an opportunity soon somewhere in the Indonesian Archepeligo. That should be quite cheap to get to.

this actually happened to me....

back in 2002 my grandad left me £1.5k, given he used to manage a travel agents and that i felt the need to get away to celebrate my divorce so i spent the money on 3 weeks on that little island you guys know as Australia! Week in Sydney, week in the Big Red Centre and a week in Cairns, just me, backpack and the old F50 with a dozen rolls of Velvia, no classic shots taken but a classic time was had.........i'd love to come back and see some more but its a small planet and theres more i'd love to see

Reflecting on this i realise i've been pretty lucky in the last 5 years - trips to Canada (first snow of the year on the Rockies, Orca pod off Vancouver), Oz and Thailand.

Next stop - SWMBO tells me India is next on the list for a big trip, though, having suffered 'Bangkok Belly' in thailand i'm yet to be convinced. I'd rather do NZ!
Until then we have to make do with a fortnight in Tuscany this coming september - £100return flights and youth hostel accomodation and a hire car.........Chianti anyone?

I have been around Europe twice, North America very often in the past years, SEA (Except VN, LAO, Cambodia) no less than 20 trips same as many islands in the South Pacific.
I'm wishing to return and spending two weeks in Greek Island and 2 weeks in Venice + Florence, you gotta love these spots with great colour of building, architecture on Greek Island.
Issues now are free time for me to do the trip, last week end, the first time, I was away 4 days since August last year without accessing to PC and internet (my intention), came back on Monday evening and still have problems in sorting all emails, PMs, orders, queries + my ordinary works flow.
One day, I'll make it.

Easy - the Middle East. If you love deserts, fascinating cultures and spectacular ruins this is the place to go. I would rate Iran as one of my favourite destinations ever, closely followed by Lebanon. $5000.00 goes a long way in this region.
