As with anything in life, you get what you pay for..... Is the 70 worth the extra cash? That's up to you and the Finance Minister (in my case Mrs Johndec ).

may i say what an addictive lens! the ultimate in speed and clarity in its class. need i say more!

The VR just improves averages. I shot half a day at WTP with a Sigma 100-300 with 1.4TC handheld, the other half with my 70-200VR with 1.7TC. I have a lot of sharp images from both.

As a non VR owner with $$$$ tied up in non - VR lenses, I have what I need to keep my interest up in my chosen hobby, but as sure as the sun rises every morning, my next fork out will be a VR - no argument. After nearly 2 months O.S. I have lusted after many a Nikkor VR seeing many in the usual tourist traps and seen a couple of intrepid VR shooters off the beaten track. For sheer convenience and flexability of having such a versatile lens in the form of the VR it will cost more $ but save on lugging more lenses, lugging that tri-pod, save on lost shots and then there's that prestige of owning one.........lust on!

Shame Nikon hasn't made any big VR lenses other than the 200-400VR and 300VR eg. 400VR, 500VR, 600VR. I think a lot of the Canon users that I admire on another forum all shoot 500MM IS lenses with TC handheld and produce some really nice shots.

Personally the 70-200vr has saved me quite a few times..... a lot of the accidents or news shots i go to are at night and sometimes a flash cannot be used... thus slower shutter speeds...

the 80-200 is just as good optically from my experiences with it... it just depends on whether the vr is worth the extra $ for your style of photography.

Discussion of VR and Non VR are full on few many of the threads accross this board and I'm sure all fellows with VR lenses never regret of owning them, so do I.
If Nikon have the prime 400VR, I'll lust it too. You're right with your view of VR. Fast glasses with VR will pay off your trouble with extra gears which you're lugging them around during the trip.
Setting up a tripod will be missed of the opportunity to take photo and hardly go anywhere you want.
If I travel OS, surely I won't bring tripods with me, and VR function will serve me well, as it did in the past.
That why we have VR prayers at the early meet on each Saturday ( 4:00am) to test your skill with VR

Well I have the 80-200 D ED.

The VR is tempting but have to watch my spend just got a 12-24 DX.

Although just thinking about the VR makes me salivate. Maybe I can get one under my Fiancees radar?....... and unload the 80-200?

I'll be joining the VR club soon.. I've ordered my 80-400 VR from birddog..

I don't think i'll be attending the early morning prayer vigil though.. I might just stay at home at 4am and pray silently to the VR god in a nice warm bed.

Can't wait to experiment with it though.

Nah. Keep the 80-200 ED and order a carbon fibre monopod for it, at the same time you order the 80-400vr. That's a much more versatile combination with a seriously cool factor.

Just don't tell the beloved what a chick magnet it is....

It's actually cheaper, but more importantly - it's available... the 70-200VR is in short supply worldwide...

I have the 80-400VR and even though the glass is probably not as good as the 70-200, it's still very good...

Have a look here for the pricing, but check with Birdy for the up-to-date pricing before placing an order...
