Storing your huge VR lens (opinion?)

I was just wondering how those of you that have huge lenses like the 80-400VR store it in your camera bag. Do you store it at all times in the soft case, and then put the soft case in your camera bag, or do you just place it in the camera bag?

I just got my new 80-400Vr home... thanks Birddog once again.. I'm trying to decide how to store it.. I have the Mini Trekker AW and I can't fit the soft case in it.. I'm thinking of just putting the lens itself in the bag. Is that a stupid idea or should I just try harder ? :?

Leave the case outside or in the cupboard, only the lens in th bag.

Hi Gleff, since i so much other stuff i have camera bag Nova 2AW, with camera filters cards, flash etc.. and then i have both my lens soft cases as my 70-200 is just a bit bigger than my 80-400 case so i have to carry 2 bags when i go to the track and i am think about just getting a big plastic stacker box the way it's going to store it in, just put the lot in there.
Cheers
John

G'day Geoff,

I now have two bags.

One backpack for the day shoots where you can carry spare everthings, different lenses, filter stuff, tripod heads, little torches all sorts of stuff, all in compartmented backpack camera back where you can carry the weight well (I reckon they're worth every cent and doesn't cost much more than a decent smaller bag!)...

And another bag that's just big anough to fit the kit lens, flash, spare cards batteries, lens cloth etc, with the 80-400VR connected to the camera carried on the strap if I needed to go light. That way I can take either bag, the smaller one (Nova CX500 or something) depending on what I want, but can't remember the last time I used the small bag, just take the packpack... I think it's just the bag you "grow out of" as soon as you get good lenses and flashes and all the other bloody stuff with this damned lust

I mainly just use the backpack now, much more convenient, all in one spot and you can carry it all day no worries, can even strap the tripod to it...

Cheers.

Edit: Oooops, forgot to answer your original question  Forget the original soft case for when you either can't fit it in your bag but might need it so you take it, or, when you sell it

mudder,
Pitty the lust never leave us alone! same as we put more weight on our body and need new clothes
Without lust, life means nothing and also means we are closed to the wooden box

I'm now facing a similar problem Geoff. The only problem is that I can't fit my 70-200 VR in my current bag! I now have bag lust, as I don't want to carry the 70-200 VR in its soft case all the time. :(

Thanks guys, I've managed to re-arrange things in the bag.. I had to take a couple of things out, but all is good now..

Now... weather permitting, I'm going to go out today and hopefully get a few shots with my new VR wonder :)

Geoff mine is just put in the bag as well, along with four other lenses an SB 800, a RA viewfinder and a D&) body. It is also a mini trekker AW.

Not really.. It's only been clearing up a little from about 2pm-3pm and I was in the middle of grocery shopping :(

Maybe tomorrow.

I did however play around taking pictures of crap around the house, and i'm impressed.. any lens that can make crap look good, is alright in my books
