I have the Tamron 70-300 with macro 1:2.
What would happen if I stuck a close up filter on it?

You would get closer, I imagine.
Depends on the type of close up filter... what multiplication are we talking about here, because, from what I understand, the D70 already ups the zoom length because of sensor size (please correct me if I'm wrong) at a factor of 1.5 so your 70-300 becomes a 105-450.

I do not believe you are wrong.
I am wondering whether macro + close up will give me more like 1:1 macro. sheepie got a close-up lens for $38, worth a crack I reckon.

Greg...
I have the nikon 6t which makes my 28-300 a 1:1 macro... the lens is a 1:2 without it...
i guess it will be the same case with your 70-300...

I have Tamron 90mm/2.8 Di and Tamron 180Di/3.5 all 1:1 macro, got lot of photos with them, but I've seen many threads about the Canon 500D so I asked Onyx get it for me, as said, I'll try with difference lenses tomorrow at the meet.

Greg,
There is a shot on this board of a fly I shot with 70-210 with 6T close up filter. Here is the link

Yours will probably have more magnification.
Good luck

Looking thru the 500D with the naked eye it's like a giant magnifying glass. Loosely holding it in front of the kit lens doesn't seem to do much other than destroy the possibility of infinity focus (it's a 77mm filter, kit lens has 67mm threads; plus the 500D ain't designed for >70mm focal lengths)

Onyx,
I'll let you try on my 70-200 and 80-400 tomorrow first thing at the meet, and you deserve it.
