Software advice please

Postby lejazzcat on Tue Jul 12, 2005 3:36 pm

Hi
im looking for a image viewer/sorter that can search a database of images via exif data, or that can preview histogram information in RGB channels+luminance, and show a thumbnail image as preview to editing .

Would come in handy for speeding up workflow of large libraries, and high volume shoots of images that havent been edited etc.

Anything out there ?

Also any tips on what software the members are using for all stages of their workflow would be of great benefit to us all.

At this time im using :-
pictureproject- cardtransfers and collections
nikoncapture4.2- raw, noise and levels/histogram adjustment
adobephotoshop7.01- layers and filters
So many ideas. So little time.

Nice Stubbsy - i think this is what im looking for TY!

In review- I just installed Picasa but so far it seems to be a very entry level pic organiser/pic viewer/pic editor... the nikon software i already own already does this work far better.

PS - Stubbsy , i just searched the forum re: Imatch and discovered your exif search script - ur awesome mate !
Now what do i have to do to make it work with the evaluation copy?
You can download the script by clicking the zip icon here - unzip, copy contents to the iMatch scripts directory and access it by right clicking a folder and choosing 'Create Categories from EXIF'.

( preferably in non programmer speak plz  )

will it work ?

Ok - well Stubbsy's suggestiion has the searchable EXIF data part nailed.

So the other part i really need/want to find is the 'rgb histogram as thumbnail', image previewer.
Does the latest version of the Camera raw plugin for PS Cs2 do it?

Any other suggestions ? (or does Imatch do that too??)

  1. Put the 2 files from my zip file into the iMatch scripts folder (mine is at C:\Program Files\photools.com\IMatch\scripts)
  2. Start iMatch
  3. Add some images to iMatch if you haven't done so already
  4. right click a bunch of highlighted images in the preview area or right click a folder in the database area
  5. From the right click menu choose Context Scripts, then choose Create Categories from EXIF from the flyout.
  6. You'll se a dialog where you specify what EXIF data to extract, whether you're a Nikon or a Canon user etc.
  7. Once you've chosen, click OK
  8. A progress dialog will display and you'll be told when things are complete
  9. To see the results, go to the Categories tab and you'll have the EXIF categories indexing your images.

I have just uploaded a newer version of this to PixSPot (link is here for simplicity)

I'm also working on a matching simple search dialog (eg show me all the pics taken with lens xx and f stop yy) - although as you've no doubt discovered this is achievable in a bigger way with iMatch as is.
