Wireless flash operation?

Postby TheDemon on Wed Jul 20, 2005 2:38 pm

I have a D70 and an SB600. When I purchased the flash, I was told it will operate wirelessly with the D70...how do I make it happen? I can't get anything from the books that came with them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Damon

Go into the CSM menu on the flash unit and turn on wireless remote operation... then make sure that it is on Channel 3.

Then go into the CSM menu of the D70 and select CSM 19, Flash mode and go to TTL Commander mode... from here you can choose the mode that you want the SB600 to work in... Select TTL.

Turn on the flash on the camera and as you take photos you should get the SB600 firing in TTL mode.

On the camera go to flash mode and change it to "commander" mode. That is in the camera set up modes. On the flash change it to "remote", from memory by holding the "sel" key down for 2 secs then following screens. Both of the above are in the manual. The big trick which is hidden in the manual is you must be on Channel 3 & Group A for remote to work, and have your flash up. Good luck

That site has the manuals and stuff online, even if you have a hard copy I recomend getting them as PDFs as well.

From page 151 of the D70s manual (the D70 will be similar)-

Commander Mode
When using optional SB-800 or SB-600 Speedlights with Commander mode selected for Custom Setting 19 (Flash mode), set the optional Speedlights to Channel 3, Group A and position them as shown below.

And from page 61 of the SB-600 manual -

Notes on using the Nikon D70's Commander Mode
Be sure to set the channel number of the remote flash unit to 3 and set the group of the remote flash unit to Group A when performing wireless multiple flash using the Nikon D70's built-in flash as a master flash unit (Commander Mode). If you do not follow this procedure, the SB-600 does not fire.

If you have a D70 (non-s) then you should definitely upgrade to the newer 2.0 firmware which makes it similar to the D70s.

Cheers,

Luke
