Lens Debate...

Well, I'm ready to buy some high quality, medium telephoto zoom glass.
The options are as follows...please, I would like your input...
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM IF APO (New)
Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 I believe it's AF-S, IF and DX??? (Used)
They're going to be right around the same price -- between 500 and 700 -- the guy that is selling the 80-200 is not 100% sure he wants to sell it, and I'm not 100% sure I want to buy it -- is it a lot better than the newer Sigma?
Of course the Sigma would come with a warranty as well (could be worth the extra price you know?) -- the 80-200, I'm sure is working properly, he's a pretty good friend of mine and I trust him.
Thanks for the input.

I'd buy the Nikon. It won't be DX, and they're a very well respected lens.

The 80-200 has three versions:
ver. 1 Push & pull with AF without collar
ver.2 2 rings and AF-D with collar
ver.3 2 rings with collar and AF-S
No such of Nikkor 80-200 in DX format.

I would buy the Nikon if AFS, Sigma if not. Where are you situated, the US? $700Aus is very very cheap for the Sigma

Yeah, I'm in the US. I believe he said AF-S -- I emailed him again, because I left my phone at work with his number in it. hrmm...well, still not sure what to do -- I know I wouldn't like messing with some push/pull lens, that seems odd...so if it's that, it's definately out.
Either way though, the AF-D and AF-S will communicate focal length with the camera, correct?

i thought there were 2 versions of the Push & pull with AF without collar
one which takes lenses hood and ones which don't

As far as I've seen and known they can both take lens hood but lens hood is an option, I've tried to put a lens hood of the 80-200 AF-D and it worked.

it use to until good'ol butter fingers dropped it.
but i was referring to the fact that some push-pull
models could share the same lenses hood as the 2-ring versions.

Nikon should make something between the 70-200 f/2.8 VR AFS and the 70-300 4-5.6 ... like an 80-200 f/4 AF-S for like $500
