Well I know there are some none believers out there however this is a test of the Nikon 12-24 f4 in identical conditions with the Tokina 12-24mm f4. I think the rest of it is rather self-explantory.

Your embedded images don't work.

Gee, thanks for that bit of advice (although I do prefer advice with solutions attached!).

Having tried several times to get images on this post I am abandoning the efforts.... better things to be getting on with!

Soz, but I clicked on it, did a quick reply without trying to solve the problem. I had guests around, and I was cooking homemade pizzas and did not want them burnt.

Just had a quick look, you're putting the URL to the page not the image. This is why it's not working.

The first one should be:

http://www.pixspot.com/albums/userpics/ ... mimage.jpg

The URL to the image was achieved by right clicking over the image on the page and selecting "Copy Image Location" (that's with Firefox). Then you just paste that into your reply and surround it with [img] tags.

Thanks for the help guys... I will work on the technique! I should actually mention that I am working off a pair of Macs (G4 OSX 10.3) and these things do not have right click. Using the Control+Click though I get copy the link which is what I was doing. Clicking on the IMG button does not work either. Its not a perfect world.

......it appears that the nikon lens has better shadow detail and the tokina lens has more contrast....

So...whats the am I missing

......You can get a 2 button mouse for mac...... Logiteck cordless is quite good......

Ants, assuming you used the same body and the same WB settings, then one of the lenses produces a colour cast.

It seems that the Nikon lens tells us that the terrace is white, whereas the Tokina lens thinks it is off-white or even cream.

Judging by the colours of the plants and the car in the street, my money is on the Nikon.

But then, I haven't seen the real-life building.

I think a two button mouse is the least of my problems! I am wondering why the images that I posted at the pixspot site have been scaled down from the 800 x 750 pixels that I posted them at ... thats when you can see how soft the Nikon lens is at f4. This is the second time that I have tested the Nikon and the Tokina head to head (with different units of both though) and the results were similar.

I went to your PixSpot site & looked at the images.
I agree that the Nikon shot in image #2 is soft - very soft.
But it doesn't look as bad (to me) in image #3, which makes me think it could be camera shake in #2.
What do you think?

Camera was mounted on a sturdy tripod throughout the test. Exposure was 1/500th at f4 and 1/125th at f8 respectively. AF was used with both lenses to acquire focus with visual verification.

I see - sorry, I can be a bit slow at times.

Your tests indicate that when both lenses are wide open, the Nikon is nowhere near as sharp as the Tokina. It would be hard to argue against your evidence.

Thanks for the assistance in getting some images onto this site ... I have finally figured out how it is done now!! Life was never meant to be easy!

As for the Nikon vs Tokina debate ... people work in different ways with their equipment and so if you are a landscape photographer or the type of person who believes it cannot be a photo unless it was made at f11 then you'll be happy with the Nikon at any rate. If you constantly work wide open though then the tokina is worthy of consideration.

Many years after buying a new Nikon FE2 I realised that I was going to need a wideangle and as I had a 35-105 lens I considered the 24mm the best option to get. I went to a camera shop that had both the Nikkor 24mm and the Tokina 24mm and I made photos with them both from the door of the store. After getting the images printed to 5 x 7 I went back and bought the Nikkor ... the difference was that obvious. This time around the Tokina wins.
