D70 L bracket

I was looking at the L bracket at the last meet and was rather impressed!

What was slightly less impressive is that, while a nice tool, according to

It is 140USD..
I really want something like this but nearly 200AUD is to much to pay for a this IMHO

Who has one and how much did you pay?

Although the cost is high, basically there is no alternative to do both vertical and horizontal shots.

I hope to be purchasing my Gitzo this month from USA and this is on the shopping list as well as a Markins M20 (NQR) $$$.

Yes... that would end up at about the same price as the RRS bracket (IMHO the RRS one looks cooler )

I've read quite a bit about that RRS L bracket previously, and to have seen it and felt it at the meet (it's so light!), it still makes me wonder whether it's worth the money, considering what else can be bought for $US140. But fozzie's right - they pretty much have a monopoly on it.

My alternative for quick switch between landscape and portrait was the tripod head I ended up buying, instead of the recommended ballhead - individual knobs to adjust for each axis of movement, so I can flip it to portrait while keeping all else the same.

I have this bracket long ago but did not like it very much, not the nice design like the RRS, then turned myself to RRS after.

Agreed, but how many people are going to appreciate the work and happily to use the brackets, if the quantity is less than 50 then here's the cost $290.00 ex-GST, FOB China for 10- 20 units, material is alluminium but not the like of RRS, I approached this way long ago and it was my thoughts: I can have my left hand business to earn more money to support my lens lust, I went down that road, spent lot my time to R&D, tried to find the best way but none is economical.
Did you know one thing: if there's any fruitful market or product, Chinese and Honkers took it long time ago, I have contact in mainland China, Vietnam, Hong Kong but none of them come up with any good ideas,
Do you also remember, the first Razor scooter came to Australia and on the market with the price was over $200.00, nowaday is so many copies of it and cost only $20.00-35.00. Can't win!!!!!

I know what you mean about the Razors, Birddy they were everywhere for ten minutes, interestingly they seemed well favoured by the IT industry no matter what the age of the user.

In terms of an L bracket, I was more thinking custom and basic Birddog, more like a strip of aluminium, milled or routered to the correct profile to fit tripod heads, cut into appropriate lengths then welded into the L. It wouldn't have the retaining pins, but I am guessing if we got ten people together, ten of these brackets couldn't be more than $5-600. If there was enough interest I would be more than happy to look into this.

I was thinking that MHD or I may be able to find the measurements on the web. If we were really lucky there may be an extrusion of the right size already available (maybe something for yachts etc) so just the welding. I will start looking.

The best thing is get a sample, real stuff, measurement sometime is not very precise.

Our workshop here is offline (and has been for some time and will be for some time, Building works) otherwise I migh have had a play...

The key descision will be weather to bend, weld or just make two peices and screw them together (easiest)

and then one of the harder bits will be putting the grooves for the plate...

Just looking at that, I recon a hobbiest wood turner could make a L bracket without too much trouble.

If you know someone who is retired and into wood turning in a big way, it might be just the thing

Yep... but after finding out my cheap plate from my old tripod will not fit a Arca swiss style clamp I now realise I have to buy one fast...

Nothing wrong with Kirk's product but better to order direct with Kirk not Nikonian.org.
Have you got the ballhead yet? what's this?

I have a plate from an old (cheap tripod)

I borrowed a head from a friend to see if this plate will fit while I wait from an L bracket to arrive...

But it is to wide for the RRS clamp that he has mounted on his Velbon Ballhead

So I have just placed an order for a Kirk L plate...
