What is your preference for photo resolution?

Just doing a poll because I have a widescreen notebook with a resolution of 1680x1050 (max. of 2048x1536). Although I prefer viewing pictures at this resolution, I know not everybody elses' computers are the same.

If our resolution varies so much, then what should be the standard resolution for photos?

You can always provide a link to the larger image, if its nescessary.

sorry Informer, I'm not quite following you.

Do you mean what resolution do we have our monitors set to, or what resolution do we set our photos up for (to post on the forum) ??

For me,
monitor = 1280 x 1024 (19" CRT Monitor)
photos - roughly 800-900px along longest side

(I believe the forum prefers images about 800px along longest side). Sometimes with frames, mine are a little longer :twisted:

should be no wider than 800 for the forum, but any size (preferably a selection) on an external link :)

I run my monitor resolution at 1280x854 (widescreen Powerbook) and resize my images for web at 800px on the longest size with 75% compression.

At first I was going to say monitor resolution, but decided on preferred image resolution regardless of what monitor resolution you have.

Thanks to those who responded.

The reason why I asked was because I find images (especially mine) better and nicer to look at when they're large, at least to my resolution. Just wondering whether you guys prefer looking at something large and in your fact, or something compact and sharp looking?

I discovered this when I was posting images to photo galleries, a lot of them would only accept pictures no bigger than 800x600 and sometimes even only 640x480. Hell some PDAs support these functions so I think its time to up the pixel counts a bit more and make it 1024x768.

I think I will change my photos to this resolution if enough people supports it.

I chose 800x600 simply because my Laptop only goes to 1024x768 and photos that large will be lost to view.

Well unfortunately those well off enough to afford big monitor real estate still have to cater to the lowest common denominator, which means assuming the viewer has 800x600 res screen. There's a reason most sites place a restriction on max image size - when resolution grows filesizes grow exponentially (lowest common factor again - the dialup user, hence try to keep filesize below 100kb).

In this forum, because of the left hand column taking up a bit of space, 600 pixels wide is probably a good limit to try and stay under.
