Thanx for the support. This has actually been happening since February, when we realised/decided that the D70 name (and camera) wasn't going to be hanging around forever, and we acquired the extra domain name accordingly.
But we felt it best to do the "official" changeover during the first anniversary weekend.
Regarding the "F", that's pretty much the same cosmetic issue that Dave was bringing up, but within the context that the depicted screen is derived from the D70 LCD, the formation of the letter is, in fact, correct.
IOW, what we have is what Nikon gave us - this is the F in the aperture readout on the LCD, and I suspect Leigh hasn't actually touched it.
What we will be doing is creating similar logos based upon other DSLRs, so if someone has a basline graphic for, say, a 20D, or a 350 (or a 2D/5D?) or whatever, could you please let us know so that we can bring our version of them into being.
I really welcome this change of name and the implied ecumenical sentiment that it represents. I do feel, however, that it must be backed up with a more even handed attitude to ALL marques and formats of digital photography. At present I see a rather horrid tribalism expressed with considerable regularity with the divide seeming to be along the US and THEM nature of the Nikon and Canon camps ( it's all very Ford and Holden when you think about it).
That is something that we, as the
mods, are keenly aware of, and we're trying hard to keep the lid on this. As you will no doubt appreciate, we're a very informal bunch here, and we like to have a lot of fun.
The issue becomes one of where do you draw the line between poking fun at a friend who uses a different brand (of whatever) from what you use, and where you both know and understand the context within which the posting has been made and thus no offense is inferred nor taken, and
where the next step has been taken, and offense, whether implied or not, has been taken.
On the one hand, I think it's essential to keep the fun side of what we do and say here - that's a part of our character here, and in fact it would be difficult, for instance, for me, personally, to be anything other than sarcastic and cynical. That's how I am, after all.
On the other hand, we all need to be aware of the sensitivities of others, and (just like in real life) only say things that we would be happy to have heard said about us, or in this case, our equipment.
Part of the problem - or perhaps challenge - is that we started as a Nikon-based site, and as a result, more than 90% of our membership are Nikon users.
That is not an issue, but I can understand that it creates a certain bias, or at least an appearance of a bias, and sadly, it probably also makes those who own one of the minority brands feel, and perhaps display, an air of defensiveness.
That's not something that I want to see; as most of us appreciate, the camera (and its accessories) is but a tool that helps us to make our images; it's the person using the tool that creates the image, and it's the people here, using their cameras, that is what this site is all about.
A week or so back I posted a link for Minolta users which went pretty well unnoticed. The community as it stands is a very amiable band of zealots but if it is to grow and embrace the addition of a more varied group then the new-comers will need to be made feel a lot more welcome and not looked down upon if they are to stay and contribute.
I do believe that most are made to feel welcome, regardless of the hardware they possess. I remember the message you're referring to, because, IIRC, somebody actually tried to dis your post a little, despite Minolta's strong history as a manufacturer of some truly great cameras.
It's a tough challenge, but I'm hopeful that we'll open up as the other marques develop a strength in numbers here that they don't yet enjoy.
