Adam, the Sigma 12-24 is a good alternative and a bit cheaper

Some goose paid $1658 for one the other day I'm aware of an excellent supplier that can do $300 better than that

There are alternatives:
Sigma 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24.
All of which cost less than the Nikon.

Target price of this lens never lower than $1600.00, it's not unusual.
Why should you bother?

Sigma 12-24 no filter can be used.
Sigma 10-20 Too early to see what the best result it can do or it'll be in the dump like its sister 30/1.4
Tokina 12-24 Another alternative but stock is not quite good and price is same as the Sigma 12-24 or less then few hundred buck from the Nikkor 12-24.

From snooping around, the absolute maximum you would bid for these would be around $1250 + freight.

From what I gather there isn't much alternative either.

My advice/experience:
Why waste time with auctions? They usually end up costing more than carefully choosing a good Hong Kong vendor and being patient waiting for a day with a good exchange rate in either US$, pounds or euros.

e.g. I got my 12-24 new "buy now" including freight & insurance for under A$1,200
My 60mm micro for $508
My 80-400VR $1630
My SB 800 $480
My 24-120VR under $500
...etc
I always buy my AA 2500mAh & AAA 950mAh NiMH batteries for A$0.01/doz, costs $19.77 for postage so less than 1.65 each landed in my mail box.(althought these are by auction)

Even with the few points extra that paypal adds on exchange rates I have always done very well (IMHO) by being patient, watching rates, picking the right day & the right currency.

IMHO you still can't beat dealing with someone who you have looked in the eye and shaken their hand. This is the luxury many in this group have been able to take advantage of over the last year

Living in a Galaxy far far away I never get to look/shake anyway so utterly meaningless for me.

I also feel it's much easier to be objective and unemotional when making purchases this way. There's plenty of people that can be totally convincing with a look/shake, yet still be very bent.

Naturally one is feel free to aquire goods in whatever way they feel comfortable.

There is a big wide world out there, not just outside Sydney, but outside Oz, waiting to be experienced.

I am with you Sheepie, the benefit of being able to look Poon in the eye and shake his hand before he went back to HK is a big advantage. What other HK supplier comes over to visit us twice a year?

I am pretty sure that the 10-20 does support front mounted filters... although I haven't heard much else about it.
