Spots through the view finder

I see spots through the viewfinder, but I can't find them on the actual pictures. They're like ghost spots haunting me while taking the picture, but disappearing when I bring them up on the photo. I cleaned the front of the lens, the rear of the lens, the viewfinder, the filters, I used the little blower on the sensor, what else should I do? Should I clean the mirror with my special lens shammy?

If you can see them in the viewfinder, they will not be on your sensor.
Look at any installed filters, front and rear elements, mirror, focussing screen (lens off the camera, from the front, located above the mirror) and the viewfinder glass.
Above the mirror?

The only area I haven't checked is the area above the mirror. Should I wipe it with my shammy. Is there something I need to be careful of?

I'd try a blower brush first.
It's a slightly difficult area to get at, but in my FMs and FEs I've been able to remove them and then clean them using lens cleaner and tissue.
Unfortunately, the screens aren't removeable in the D70, but with care, lens tissue and cleaning fluid should be up to the task.

dodda,
This is very much tongue in cheek, were the spots there before you had a drink or during/after.
Cheers,

Honest I wasn't drinking this time. However they did seem to mysteriously appear after my wife slapped me particularly hard. I wonder if that could be the prob? maybe I'll let my cheek cool down and check again.

There is a simple answer to your perceived problem You have the camera set to "spot metering".
