A little maths works out what is currently possible..

Everyone is always speculating about how many megapixels future technology will eventually deliver us, but a litttle bit of maths reveals that some pretty impressive numbers can be acheived with current technology.

The current D2x sensor is 4288 x 2848 pixels in a 23.7mm x 15.7mm sensor. This equates to 12.2 mp at a density of 181 pixels per mm. If Nikon were able to replicate that density on a 36mm x 24mm sensor (and I can see no reason why that is not technically possible, expensive but possible) you would have a 28.3 mp sensor (181 x 36 x 181 x 24).

The fun begins when you start playing with numbers that Nikon themselves have admitted are possible in the future. They have stated that they think they can get 24mp out of the DX sensor, which equates to 253 pixels per mm. Turn that into a FF sensor and you get 55.3 mp

I think my 2.8g pentium may struggle if I chuck a 55mp image at it

John, have you looked at Canon's FF Eos 5D?
It's quite interesting in comparison to the other cameras out there.

Canon EOS-20D - 22.5mmx15mm (1.6x crop) - 6.4um x 6.4um - 8.2mp
Canon EOS-5D - 35.8mmx23.9mm (1.0x crop eg. FF) - 8.2um x 8.2um - 13.3mp
Nikon D2X - 23.7mm x 15.7mm (1.5x crop) - 5.5um x 5.5um - 12mp

So basically the point there is the sensor size has increased but the pixel pitch/size has also changed.

Yes, I have looked at the 5D, it actually "inspired" my original post. IE: What sort of MP would you get out of Nikon's best current tech compared to Canon's and the numbers I came up with blow the 1DS Mk2 out of the water, let alone the 5D...

Of course translating that into reality is a whole different matter :?
