Smugmug introduces Smugmaps

Postby leek on Sat Aug 27, 2005 6:16 pm

For all the Smugmug users out there: You may or may not have noticed that they have linked up with Google Maps to provide mapping for your photographs...

See http://maps.smugmug.com

It's very early days, but if you enter the coordinates of where a photo was taken, it will plot it on a map / satellite image... The coordinates are added to the EXIF/IPTC information in the photo.

If you have a GPS receiver, there are software tools out there that will help you to add the coordinates to your photos automatically...

I have added coordinates manually to one of my photos to see what it looks like... If you're interested in an Australian example, have a look at: http://maps.smugmug.com/?feedType=geoAl ... 704&zoom=3
Cheers, John

John, sounds like you are on your way to a D2X. I know you have a GPS, the D2X has the link to automatically include that data.

Just noticed another nice feature... If you have coordinates attached to your photos, you can click on a link at the bottom of your gallery to download a Google Earth .kml file and then zoom around the world looking at where you took the photos... Cool!!!

I wish... Maybe a D200...

Until then - I'll use the software tools to add coordinates to my pictures...
