Needle in a Haystack

As many of you are probably aware a particularly virulent strain of D200itis has swept the internet recently. The worst affected appears to be the home of flamers and idiots looking for a village, dpreview.

However if you search hard enough there appears to the odd person there who actually knows what they are talking about. This was posted on the 28/8/05:

Probably will disappoint some of you (and me), the upcoming Sept. 1st announcement won't have any DSLR and lenses.
Rather, there will be four DC's, including an upgrade of 4500/990/950. Interesting spec's is the 6.1mp CCD sensor which doesn't seem to appear in any other DC. The package is supposedly much sleeker in similar style of the S series.
Two other DC's will have WiFi built-in. Although Kodak introduced one earlier this year but probably the Nikon DC's will be more integrated than the Kodak SD WiFi adaptor card version.
Not sure about the forth one.
There may be a new set of flash system.
D200 will come, just not this time. Rumor mill says November (yuck). Spec's are pretty much same as what have been floating around: F6/F100 style body, 11 point AF system, 10mp, 5fps, 50ms shutter lag, built-in flash with better CLS control capability than D70/D70s, etc.

This guy was pretty much on the money. Shame it was lost in the 1000 other "rumour" posts

John, i too seen that post and had a good read. I dont believe anything till it hits the shelf basically. I would love to see a new model with a few improvements but well one must wait as i would love the D2x and well like everything always big hype when a new camera is out and i will wait and bide my time. At times i something think what the hell and think about just going out and buying a Canon to try before my Nikon lens collection got out of hand. We always seem to wait and wait and well after waiting they still dont seem to bring anything out that Canon hasn't already. So are we just buying for the Name and i know Nikon makes a good lens, but is this enough i think they lack in the camera department and well lets hope it's not too long.

Good points BBJ and who knows how accurate his D200 info is. The point I was trying to make is that he nailed the 1/9 releases and it's not like you could guess stuff like that.

John, thats right i think it would be hard to say what Nikon will do, but i do think they really need to be doing something as it seems like a catch up job in a lot of ways. Ok i am not a die hard Nikon fan a camera is a camera a tool, doesn't matter what name is on it as long as it does what you want it to do. Like my car as long as it gets me from A to B is all that matters.

If i was given a Canon to play with and found it had the few small things i would like to see, i would not have any hassles in going out and getting 1.
For example if the 20D had a faster focus than the D70 i would buy 1, then get a lens for it and learn to use it.
How many time do we buy things thinking it will be great because some one said so and find out that it doesn't quiet do what you want. So ok D200 might be ok for some maybe not for others so untill it hits the shelf and in the hands of people and being used to see what flaws it has, then i would buy it if it suited the style you shoot.

I'm not too worry about the D200 will be released or not to be released.
In the real term, if you're happy with your current outfit, why should you look further for something new with more heavy financial get involved. BTW, Nikon or Canon is a camera and it won't do much better in your hand if you don't have the skill to handle it.

Right at this moment, both camps have the best of the best in their range of DSLRs and you're holding one of the best Nikon DSLR in its range, the D200 might not do well for you either after you bought and use it, you may find it's not suitable for your shooting style, same as the 20D or 5D.

See what you can afford and stick with it, it's better to have one suitable camera for you now, rather than sitting there waiting for another 9+ months, as said many times, even the D200 was announced yesterday, you won't be able to get it till early next year.

The D2x was announced in November 04, I was among the first people to get it in Australia in late of March 05, but it's from HKG stock, Maxwell stock is healthy now as at August 05.

Hope the dream of holding the D200 will pass soon till its officially announced. Let's go shooting!!!!!!!

Birdy, you hit the nail right on the head with this comment !

For those of us that are being held back by certain functions of our current bodies, then I guess it makes sense to look higher up the tree. For those that are yet to reach the bodies limitations, get out there and take some pics instead of worrying about what the new Nikon will give you.....other than a much lighter wallet. If you're not producing the quality photos you aspire to, getting the D200/D2X won't help you....but more experience might (in most cases)
