I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other well priced shops in HK? My cousin is moving there to live and I am hoping she can bring me back a few items (i.e 70-200VR) on her visit to Sydney in a few weeks. Thanx in advance! :)

You might ask her to bring back for you a D2x and it's more easier to find then the 70-200VR atm.

Geoff,

Two places I always try first for camera gear;

1. Stanley Street in Central. There are about 5 shops in this street so comparison shopping is easier. The range and prices are reasonable. I like Photo Scientific which is the first in the street. The older gentleman there is Poon. Not our beloved Poon as I found out.

2. The Computer Centre in Wan Chai. This is a two story mall of very small shops with everyting computer and electronics related. Prices are competitive with them all crammed in there and it's worth haggling. My favourite here is Coxall on the lower floor.

Be wary of the shops in Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) as they are used to tourists with more money than sense and have outrageous prices. I have however got a good deal in TST with perserverance.

Good luck with your remote shopping.

Cheers
Dean

Man Shing and Wing Shing - both Kowloon side.

Avoid any place in TST as Deano said, these are the places with big bright neon signs. They don't publish prices and will charge as much as they perceive you're willing to pay (by the way you're dressed, your skin colour, ability to speak Canto, etc).

Stanley St is also a bit of a rip off - but at least the prices are published (about on par with B&H & discount online US retailers). I found Stanley Street is more for photo printing than buying cameras, lenses or accessories. The whole street are photo retailers and pro photo labs, and being very close to Central it attracts the tourists to rip off. It's also published in every "welcome to HK' type brochure as being the place to buy photographic gear, but you won't see any locals shop there.

The best are the two giant stores Man Shing and Wing Shing, both on the main street with other smaller camera retailers near Mongkok MTR (train) station. Truly the best no haggle prices. Gets VERY busy even by HK standards... Man Shing also stocks rare and exotic glass eg. brand new Nikkor 50 f/1.2; 58 Noct, etc.
