Lens hood on the kit lens is a lousy fit?

Anyone else find the lens hood supplied with the kit lens (18-70) doesnt fit to well?

I find it fits perfectly. Make sure you turn it until it clicks into place.

Yup, I find exactly the same thing (edit: I mean slightly loose fitting). Quite annoying, but I figure if that's all I can find wrong with a camera (apart from the exposures left in RAW mode issue) then I can be pretty pleased with it!

Nup... No problems here... the only thing I find annoying about the hood is that when I store it on the lens with the hood reversed it takes some force to get it to click off (I'm still very delicate with my gear!)

Photodude, MCWB,

As Woody says, make sure that you twist it until it clicks into place. Sometimes it feels a bit stiff ...

What exposures left issue? As long as the camera is telling me the minimum number of frames I have left (I dont give a damn if it's more) then it odesn't really matter, does it?

As a rule of thumb, I work on the basis of twice the number displayed as being the available number of shots.

Or ... would you prefer that it came up short? It's telling you that you have 5 left; you shoot just three and ...

and ...

and ...

oops, sorry, all done!

I think I know which would be the less frustrating method.

It is a great fit when you put it on properly which you can do once you realise that you (probably) won't break anything by exerting the required amount of force. It took me a few times to get it right.

Granted, the no. of frames left in ANY mode will always be just a guesstimate - however, in RAW mode on the D70 when the card is near empty the no. of frames left displayed is well off the mark. It's based on uncompressed NEF file sizes while the D70 does not support this mode. In any of the JPEG modes, its guesses are far closer to the truth. This is a "bug" I believe, yet to be addressed with firmware.

As for the hood - as mentioned above, you don't just 'slide' it a quarter turn, you slide it and twist it with great force until it 'clicks'.

I have had no problem with the front lens cap on the 18-70mm DX kit lens nor any other Nikon lenses.

Just make sure that you hear the retaining clips snap before moving off.

Cheers,

I had same problem initially - didn't realise that you had to snap the hood on, not just turn it. Then a kind soul on this board told me. This board is great for assistance!

Thanks one and all :)

I knew that Nikon wouldn't make an inferior product - I will try the snap and turn method this evening.
