Have you ever shot with the 70-200VR?
Its construction and its AF-S will beat any other Nikkor lenses mile away,
Though the glasses of the 80-200 AF-D are great but compare to the 70-200Vr are not comparable, the 80-200 AF-D or D or push pull are the great Nikkor glasses in the past but not with today technology.
With today
modern DSLR bodies, you need fast AF and S, then you'll be appreciated what the value of money which you're invested into.
Ive got both.
AF is noticeably faster on the 70-200 compared to 80-200ED, not to mention MUCH quieter.
70-200 has nicer handling than 80-200ED, 80-200AFS was larger/heavier than 80-200ED
Focus-stop buttons and ability to touchup focus manually on AFS lens is very handy.
VR is definitely useful in certain situations such as panning, lowish light, too much coffee
70-200 is much sharper (IMHO) than 80-200ED at combination of longzoom/wideopen/minfocus.
80-200 reportedly has lower issues with lens-flare.
If you have the $$$ and can justify it to yourself, the 70-200 is the better lens IMHO.
