Sony has just annouced the new DSC-R1
APS-C size 10.8 million pixel CMOS sensor

Is the D200 will be with the Sony APS-C size CMOS, 10 MP?

Interesting, there has been rumours that the D200 will be 10mp not 12mp, this release can only add weight to those rumours

When Dad suggested to me that the D2x would be 12mp, I said no wya... it seemed silly to release a slightly lighter version of the D2x.

Nikon would either have to go down or up in the mp battle, and if they went down, which they would with this sensor, I'm sure the price would too.

After a quick glance at the preview on dpreview:

Good:
160-3200 ISO

Bad:
Slightly smaller sensor than Nikon or Canon so you are looking at about a 1.7x crop factor.

Nikon: 23.7mm x 15.6mm
Canon: 22.8mm x 14.8mm
Sony: 21.5mm x 14.4mm PS: It has virtually the same pixel density as the D2X sensor.

Who know?, it could be the sensor of the new D200, if it's the case, I won't touch it.

I doubt they'd want to have a different crop factor sensor in there line up. Arn't the DX lenses designed around 1.5?

That's 10MP on Sony Cybrershot or say 1.65x crop factor, but it can be 12MP with 1.5x with Nikon using the same SONY sensor.

I agree with Birddog. If Nikon does use this sensor in D200, I won't touch that either.

That seems a bold statement. There are lots of other things that make up a camera rather than just the number of pixels. Assume for the sake of argument that a new Nikon DSLR was to come out tomorrow using this sensor. There are lots of things we don't know about it:

• Dynamic range - how good is it in the shadows?
• Frame rate
• Sync speed

And those are just sensor-related things...
I would be surprised if this camera was positioned to out-perform the D2X in any significant way, but the step up from 6 Mp to 10ish Mp (ie. from D100/D70) would be a significant one. Personally I would hold off from rash judgments until the camera actually arrives...


Some of the DSC-R1 specs look very interesting, but one of the first things I looked for was details of the EVF (as there's no mirror box). It seems unchanged from the 828 - a disappointment.
It will be interesting to see how many RAW shots it will buffer. I will be disappointed if there is no buffer (like the 828) but then I might not be in the target market for this camera.

Yes. This sensor will capture better images than my current one in D70. But the other thing is that this sensor is SMALLER than current DX sensors and it means that my 18-70 will become even less wide and I will have to be further away from my daughter, especially when I'm using my 50mm F1.8d. And there isn't much room left in my house to back off.

It would be pretty bold thing for Nikon to release D200 with this sensor when Canon just released 5D, IMHO.

And it seems that frame rate is 3fps for R1, I believe that's the limit of the sensor.

I don't think Nikon would cange from the DX format unless they had no other option, if they were to change the sensor size surly it would be to full frame.
