SB-800 Humming...

Postby aswcheng on Sun Sep 11, 2005 6:31 pm

Fellow SB-800 owners,

Finally bite the bullet and got one for myself. Now I understand why people wants to run workshop on this thing! 8-)

Wonderful piece of equipment, both in terms of the build quality and its capabilities (which I'm sure will take a while for me to learn). I've noticed something though - *whenver the backlight of the LCD is on*, there is a faint humming noise (similar to the sort of noise one gets when the flash is charging up, but much lower in volume). It's not very loud at all - only audible if I hold the flash near my face/ear.

Does anyone else notice this on their SB-800? A friend of mine has said his does the same thing as well.

P/S. Isn't it nice to have the board back in action again? Three cheers for the hardworking administrators!

Hi Andy
you won't regret buying the SB800....it is AMAZING !

I wouldn't worry about the humming sound.....mine also does it when the LCD is backlit. If you notice, once the flash jumps into "standby", it goes away, until you half-press the shutter release and wake the flash up.

I'd imagine that this sound is the flash keeping itself fully charged in readiness for you to take a photo. When it goes into standby, it simply ceases holding itself fully charged.

Make sense ?@?

Recently purchased a SB800 and love it. I just find over the SB600 I have it's a fair more versitile flash as you'd expect.

S'not the flash holding it's charge that makes the humming cos if you turn the backlight off but leave the unit running (off standby I mean!) the humming stops. I think it's actually the little backlight mechanism that does the humming but I assume because they all do it there's nothing to worry about.

To be totally honest I hadn't even noticed the humming until you pointed it out!!

Keep flashing!

I was just about to say the same thing; you must have read my mind... I too think it's the backlight (kind of like some fluorescent lights humming), but just thought I'll check if others' SB-800s behave the same way.

You are the fourth person today who said that to me today! I hope I haven't sparked a mass panic... 8-)
