Best affordable portable lighting kit

I think they call these portable strobe lights powered by a hand carry generator

would be good if it could be attached to a D2x and act as a flash, but I will settle for an afforbale one that works like a portable studio light as well

Need to shoot a dancer in backlit scene like an alley way with graffitti in mid afternoon, want this sort of look:

Love the backlit scene, model illuminated by a strong portable strobe light
the SB800 just doesn't cut it.

What you need to ask for is a Broncolor Mobil kit. It will connect with your D2x with a sync lead. You might also need to hire a flash meter.

An alternative would be to hire a Norman 400B from Borge's Imaging at Crows Nest (02 9906 6544).

just so i don't sound like a complete fool when i call up

is the Broncolor Mobil kit just 1 light and a portable generator. Is it referred to as a portable strobe light?
I remember back in work experience at Pioneer Studios Broadway they had these strobe lights with a small portable generator, they were flash sync to the camera but they also had a reflector umbrella attached to the light stand
I don't think i need anything that fancy

I know how to duplicate the Daniel Klajmic's style by using high shutterpeed and 1 bright light source

as for flash metering i don't think i need that i will just work out corect exposure by trial and error, it's going to be an art directed shoot so even if the image is under or overexposed it will still look stylish

Birddog I think for this shoot i will rent so i can try before i buy.
If it goes well I will certainly want to purchase these kits, they are worth their weight in gold for the end result!

The Broncolor Mobil is a battery/power module into which up to two heads can be plugged. You can add a brolly if you choose or you can use the head with any manner of reflector. The advantage is that the Mobil has a modelling light which will let you see what's happening to some extent.

The Norman 400 B is a simpler thing with just a battery pack and smaller head.

I had lunch today with a colleague who bought a 500WS battery flash with modelling lamp from Dragon Image for a fashion catalogue shoot last week. I don't know whether Dragon Image rent their gear but you might care to ring them and see - http://www.dragonimage.com.au/ - 02 9906 5488

The Dragon Image head is bulkier than the Mobil.
