when shooting indoor with sb800 onboard, and there is also tungsten light and possibly some natural light in the room as well, what choice to you use for WB?

I mainly used Auto and shoot RAW, it can be played within NC 4xxxx after.

I'm with Birddog. I shoot in RAW with auto WB and then adjust in PS later if needed.

If the flash is the key light then you can just use auto or flash. If you are trying to balance ambient incandescent light with flash you should put a gel filter over the flash to match the light and set the wb to incandescent.
Btw even if you disable the flash firing having the SB-800 on the camera will greatly improve auto-wb since the SB-800 provides colour temperature information to the camera.

I've started to get into the habit of setting the WB to Flash. I find that the light from the SB800 is usually more dominant than the tungsten lighting, and is relatively close in WB to daylight. I have noticed that I usually get warmish tones (due to the tungsten lighting), but often that looks ok.....and if it doesn't, I always shoot RAW so I just fine-tune/change settings in NC or PSCS2.

I also find I set the WB to Flash, but it depends on the nature of the subject, I tend not to use Auto at all.

I use Flash for the WB then change it during PP if I feel it's incorrect.

very good point. Though I often find I either forget or can't be bothered getting the gel out and sliding it on......lazy, I know

However, if one wants to obtain the best possible results, this is a very wise thing to do.

I normally set to WB -2. But now after reading this thread, I think I will be using 'flash' when using sb800.

If it's a series of shots in the same room, with the same lighting, I'll generally stay away from auto and set to 'flash'. I've found that if you have multiple different light sources in a room, and you're moving around taking shots picking up different light sources, including the speedlight, that auto can give unpredictable results with the change in lighting.

If anything, purposely setting to 'flash' gives you a 'standard' to do all your PP work off, which will be roughly the same for that room.

Also assume the use of .NEF (RAW) as well.....

I shoot with PRE-WB and in NEF. Then i adjust in PSCS RAW.

I shoot RAW and set WB to Flash. Find it gives me a better reference point than auto for subsequent adjusting in PSCS.

RAW with auto and sometimes PRE and work it in PSCS2 if required

I too shoot RAW and AUTO I think the incamera auto WB is quite good and then just change it about (if needed) with PSCS2.

Hi i've just done a little test seem's to me that shooting raw with camera set to auto WB then adjust the WB in NC to flash work's well

Mainly Auto in uncontrolled lights and sometimes Flash for warmer tones. Rarely used other modes (sometimes cloudy tho).

Used PRE whenever I can get a hand on the lights around.

As a result of an old thread here on Nikon's pre-set WB values, I use either auto or Cloud WB setting when shooting with flash as apparently the camera values for Flash and Cloud are around the wrong way. This certainly has been borne out in my shots. Flash shots done with Cloud WB are spot on.
