Copying slides with the D70

Have any of you folks tried to copy slides using a 1:1 slide duplicator? I did so recently with some decent results. I even copied some negatives and inverted them with PS. I got color casts when the negs were inverted to positives but I corrected the cast to a large extent with PS. I used sunlight as the light source. If play around with the WB, maybe color some casts would be reduced. Any tips that would be useful?

My point is, is this a viable alternative to investing in an expensive Nikon Coolscan film/slide scanner ?

I have copied 6 x 6 slides and negs using a light box and a doc copy stand. They were then printed at A3 and were very acceptable.
