Which generic R/C did you get?
If it's the Jaycar one, I'd fork out the extra 10-20 bucks and buy the real Nikon one... I found that when shooting in the studio, the generic one worked 1 out of 5 or 6 times I pressed it and the real Nikon one worked every time.
Then again, a lot of people have had different results.

Hi there,
Congrats on your purchase and hope you have great time playing with it (I did!).
The kit lens is fast to autofocus.
Exactly what I thought too when I first tried it.
