DSLR Users Challenge 9: Illuminated, Naturally!

Courtesy of Manta:
Natural light is around us all the time and it's something we probably all take for granted. Whether it be from the sun, the moon or the stars, the natural light of our world can provide brilliant illumination, sinister shadows, explosions of colour and devilish illusions to trick the mind's eye.

Your mission in this Challenge is to look closely at your surroundings and use the natural light within them. Be observant, artistic and creative - just don't use any artificial light sources. Your image can be of any subject but it's your use or demonstration of natural lighting that will be judged.

Enlighten us!

I guess that calling a SB800 a sun, it still doesn't count as natural?

An excellent challenge subject.

Cheers
John

Perhaps you need to get one of the new SM800 - Nikon SpeedMirrors.
It fits into the hotshoe of your camera and you can direct the available sunlight to wherever you want it.

The SM600 is OK, but the mirror surface is 1/3 smaller & doesn't come with coloured gel reflectors

Seriously, a great theme. I have been waiting for a theme like this one to come along for a while now.

Bust out the 50mm 1.4/1.8's (if you have one) !
unfortunately, I don't :(

Yes Dave, my 50 1.4 might get a workout and I just bought an 85 1.8 (thanks Alan) so that's another option.

I don't even own one, just playing devil's advocate, but does a reflector qualify as natural light?

Nice idea Simon...
It should lead to some interesting images...
A level playing field on one aspect of the photography at least...

Phil - a reflector is not the source of light so would therefore not affect eligibility. When I was thinking this theme through I came up with all kinds of creative ways to pull it off, as I'm sure others will as well. All that matters is that the source of the light is NATURAL.

There actually aren't that many sources of natural light but it's the creative way we can utilise them that will, I think, bring some fantastic images to this Challenge.

I'm pleased everyone seems happy with the theme. Now, if I can just put into practice some of those whacky ideas I had...

Thanks John. Scott said the emphasis should come back to photographic ability rather than arguments over interpretation of an abstract theme so I had to scrap a page full of wild ideas I had mulled over for a few days. They can wait for another time perhaps...

I expect to see some great work for you on this one Mr Leek!
