IMHO, the collection of this challenge is better than the last one.
Good luck to all!

Eligibility for voting is the same as for entry... 10 posts, location in profile etc...
Anyone who already has a username can vote,... follow normal procedure to get one..
Yes, some stunners in this comp... Voting is off to a strong start!

Some very nice photos in there.
I think people have worked much better with the theme this time around.

Some of the shots are certainly stunners.. Also a lot easier to vote in this challenge.. the theme is very straight forward..
I've put my votes in.. Good luck to everyone that entered.

yeah... saw that... I dont want to give to much away but I think I know why
the f-stop was not a required tag for the comp so its all good..

Hey Scott,
I'm not even sure if this is possible with the software that you use, but might it be an idea to allow entry (but no display) of comments at the same time as the voting... It might be nice to be able to review the images as you vote...
Just a thought for future compos...

Must have been very dark where that shot was taken, also probably the fastest lens on this forum!

This is the first of these comps I've entered where I look at my image and have a certainty that I'm not in the running
In fact I'm NOT going to rate my pic as awesome.
I think that's a good thing

Non-CPU lenses give an F-stop of 0. my F8 reflex does that too. But it's not the image i submitted that is doing it so fear not, it's not mine.

Well my shot didn't even make it (corrupt Exif Data) but if it makes you feel any better, after seeing the competition I wouldn't have voted better then average for mine. There are some very brilliant and imaginative people on this forum.

I think I needed to get up much earlier to get shots near the good ones in this comp.
Also good to see some of the people / movement shots rather than the more traditional long exposures eg. city lights (not that these arn't a bad thing - not at all).
MHD: Are you going to have a look at a move to Gallery 2.0? It's much easier to deal with and much cleaner. (I have a pretty standard install at images.imagineant.com)

Stubbsy, I am the same as you, my shot didn't acheive what I envisioned. I am telling myself I am cycling, having a low period before building up for the next comp
Truth is, my shot is just crap

I think we should all try and enter if possible. I always learn from these comps, no matter how my image comes out. I find the thought process before the shot very beneficial

Glen u are right, the process before the photo, i.e the setting up etc is what makes us all better! I think that there is one clear winner in this comp, no, not my own!! Can't wait to see if it wins but I don't think there is a comparison with this particular one.

Same for me there is one stand out photo, and then a few in the running for the minor places (IMHO). Can't wait till the winners are revealed and we can hear the stories and techniques behind some of these shots.

Considered it Pippin...
Last Beta I tried (Holy hand grenade) didnt allow hotlinking of images... which I guess is not important...
Perhaps after the next comp which will be a big one...
....
Lets stop narrowing down who owns the f/1 lens... stop guessing as some one may reveal him, ruining his anonymity...
I'm very happy with most entries, but has been stated there are some outstanding ones... and they are doing well... While not saying it is anyones race anymore, I would say any of the top 3 could win it...

That's great to hear! I think that you want to have enough votes to make the win and placings valid - ie not just 1 person's opinion skewing the vote

On the current one images can be hotlinked. Thumbs are a bit harder than G1, but there is a
module to improve that. (
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/28154).
This thread of mine is using images in G2:

One thing I like (well I seem to remember liking) is that you can set up groups....

I'm intrigued to read people write of a particular stand out image. I don't see one that stands out so much from the others? I see about 5 which I think could win it. And there's been some
modest comments in this thread. I don't think anyone should feel bad about their entry.
It's just for fun, and we all learn something from all the photos I think.

How many people voted for the last challenge ?
(I wasn't around for it...)
Posted:

There were ~47 votes per image...
I am happy with this comp as last comp was a "super comp"
Having 30+ in just on 32 hours is good...
of course the rate of voting exponentially decays, but we may see ~40 votes per image which would be great...

It will be interesting to see which wins, there really are a number of shots which are up there. The beauty of this form of voting is that all shots get a vote subject to the voters opinion relative to his/her preferred style.
Good luck to all participants and from this I'm sure we can all learn a little and improve our skills.

Out of interest, how does the tallying work ? Is the scale linear ? Is it just the sum of all votes tallied, also does everyone find out the rank of all photo's or just the top three ? Or does the person that submitted the photo find out how theirs rank ? What happens in the event of a tie ?
Ooops
Sorry for all the questions..

My understanding is that your photo receives the average of all the votes cast for it and it is those averages that determine the eventual ranking...
If you click on one of the photos in the previous challenges, you will be able to see what information is made public... Basically you'll see how each photo ranked out of the 28 photos in the challenge and how many of each type of vote your photo received...

Yep... as Leek said, your final result is the average of the scores and yes the scale is linear (1-10)
All ranks and scores and even break down of scores are revealed at the end (have a look at past comp galleries)
In the event of a tie I decide by changing my vote... (never has happened)

Bump.... and
I'm pretty sure the first 5 are about right. I'm fairly sure that's fairly close to the order I voted in. That said I think I was looking for a more artistic interpretation of the theme
rather than merely technical excellence.
Congrats Andre. This was a VERY convincingly good photo in all ways.

I agree Paul. Andre's shot of the Bogey Hole is a corker. This is the first comp when I've considered one pic a standout both in terms of interpetation of the theme and in quality of the image.
And I can't resist pointing out that 2 out of the 6 competitions have been won by people from Newcastle which has only a tiny number of representatives in the forum

Well deserved congratulations to Andre, Embi and Potatis!
These fabulous shots would hold up in any competition. 'Bogey Hole' was a real standout for me in it's beautiful simplicity; 'Descent from Darkness' was just a killer shot that really nailed the theme and 'Night Reflections' was one of the best shots I've seen of the Old Coathanger.
I'd like to thank, most sincerely, everyone who voted for my shot, 'Rush Hour' and considered it was anywhere near this sort of illustrious company. The shot was literally taken and posted within a few short hours of the deadline and I didn't know what I was going to shoot when I left the house that afternoon. Luckily the weather and the light came together nicely and I got something I liked.
Congratulations to all who entered and for making this a tough challenge. The standard was very high and augers well for the future.
I'm really looking forward to Challenge #7.
