Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 fast fifty euphoria

With everyone getting new bodies, I think that separate section for you to proudly display your first image from your new acquisition is in order.

This applies to brand new bodies, as well as bodies that are simply newly acquired by you.

Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 fast fifty euphoria

Postby latch on Fri Sep 19, 2008 2:47 pm

After months of frustration shooting casual indoor shots at night (social events, parties, etc) I decided to get a fast fifty prime. The low price of the 50 f/1.8 was very tempting at first, but after reading plenty of reviews I concluded that most people agree the f/1.4 is better at the open apertures which is where I'll be using it.

My Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 arrived the other day, and I can't get over how wonderfully fun it is to use. Its a full 4 stops faster than my kit zoom, and this makes such a difference in lower light situations. The super shallow depth of field at f/1.4 opens up a whole new photographic world for me.

I opened the box, put the lens on my D70, opened it up to f/1.4 and candidly snapped this picture of my wife sitting across our study desk. One glance at the result, and I was addicted!

And here's a shot from a few minutes later, when I was exploring the amazing new world of f/1.4

Yep. You now got the 50mm bug. It's the sweetest of all lenses.

If it's anything like the Canon counterpart, you will be stoked! Well done.

My wife had her 40th birthday last week at a low light venue so I used it combined with some bounce flash off the ceiling and the shots came out pnem phenam bloody brilliant. The skin tones even with flash is so natural (I wont bore you with posting photos) but these 50 1.4 lenses at the price of $400-$500 are IMHO a must have as they have so many uses.

The 50mm 1.4 is fantastic. I stuck mine on the new d300 last week, auto iso, and got some great low light social dinining shots. You wil love it.

It is a great lens. You will enjoy using it. But don't be overcome by being able to use 1.4f. It is excellent at all apertures.

I haven't put another lens on my camera since getting the 50, and I've taken a lot of shots just to get a feel for the lens. Being 4 stops faster than anything else I've ever photographed with, I'm really noticing the shallow depth of field.

What apertures do you use your fast 50s at most regularly? Do you find that f/1.4 is makes the depth of field a little too shallow?
