My first DSLR!

FINALLY! I've got my brand new (well, second hand & well used) D70s, cleaned the chunks of dust that were obviously clinging to the sensor, and whipped in my new 50mm 1.8 and here's what you get.

Yeah I know, I've gone crazy on the depth of field - but I've never had so much control before so I couldn't help it.

:D

Jazz (The dog) never looked so good Andy, how is she taking to all the attention :) Great first shot, I like the shallow DOF used, but I'd be torn between going for nose in focus, and going for the eyes. If it was a person the eyes would be the point of focus, but with a dog, I think either can work.

Well Jazz is my only willing model :) she definitely likes it compared to the harsh flash of the old point and shoot.

As for eyes in focus, yes I do agree. Trouble is there are two kinds of dogs - those that like eye contact and those that don't. Jazz is the latter and tends to look down to the ground or sideways instead of straight at you - hence as soon as she does glance a direct look I have to be quick on the focus to get it right! (i.e. imagine one hand is in the air clicking and waving like crazy to get her attention, and the other balancing the camera).

Plus - isn't that shiny nose just lovely?

i like the nose in focus look you have in this image. your eyes are led up the nose and towards the eyes.

if anything i would say slightly more depth of field, but this is a good image none the less

well done and good shooting!

Thanks Joshman.

I definitely agree with you on that one. I'm only just starting to get a better feel for the appropriate aperture settings to use, and also realising that the 50mm seems to have an almost flat DOF for the low f's.

yeah, agreed on that one, my 50mm f1.8 at f1.8, has a shallower depth of field than the auto focus mechanism can resolve, leading to shots that look in focus through the viewfinder, but are just out in the final product.

it certainly is fun to experiment with...

just wait till you start turning your lens's backwards :D

Hehe...scored a lens reversal ring from ebay for $1 and was actually reversed up in the yard for the first time yesterday!
