Not a bad teleconverter, there certainly is some loss in sharpness, not particulary bad but noticeable, more noticeable is the drop in contrast, however all in all a very cheap way to get into the +700mm focal length with a half usuable f-stop (6.7).

A couple of images from the first decent crack at using this converter on the 300 f4.

I gotta say, this surfing caper is pretty addictive, I could sit back with a couple of cold ones and watch these guys for a couple of hours, unfortunately i got the flu so the best I did was a coffee and 1/2 an hour :?

look ma, no hands and upside down...

I think I am comfortable enough with my sexuality that I can say, nice ass :rotfl2:

These look pretty good to me!

Glad to see that you had a play with the TC17EII. I didnt find it all that useful when I used it at the zoo the other time, but then again I really needed more light rather than length for most of the day.

Yes, especially the first one.

A figure like that, were it not for the spray, would also be good for dropping into all sorts of incongruous contexts.

You mean during summer?

Any chance of AF with this??

Nice shots Gerry. Where abouts were you standing/sitting to take these?

I do agree that the signature high-contrast look from the 300 has been diluted.

My D300 kept AF-ing without complaint when I used this combination at Taronga...sadly nothing worth keeping from it....too little light for f/4 let along f/6.7

 I think we should call it the "153000 combo". [ie 300x 300 x 1.7)

beanie+chair+beer+camera = relaxing winter arvo. :rotfl2: but yes summer would be better.

AF dream, no real notiveable reduction in performance, however bit hard to guage ona day like this, it was pretty grey and not very contrasty so there was a few cycles thru the focus range to find the subject on a occasions.

I was on the southern end of bronte, just up past the pool under the shelter of teh rock overhand - remember the pool we took pictures of ages ago there? just near there.. thats also where teh surfers jump in.

re. contrast, i will have a bit more of a look at this in the coming weeks to see how much decrement to the contrast occurs due to the converter...

meant to be some crazy surf this weekend, so saturday mornign is looking liek a sunrise session followed by a surfer session for me.

Hmmm I am not sure if I am going to be fit for Saturday, but keep me in the loop as I would love for an excuse to get out with camera gear.
