Any NT Members out there?Really not sure where to post this topic, and apologies that it's not actually a photography question, but I'm hoping the good graces of the Mods will prevail.
My best friend's son is just completing his Pilot's training and is heading off in August to live and hopefully find work in either Darwin or Alice Springs, as he can't get work flying here in the City. Trouble is - he knows nothing about either town and has been told there are certain suburbs / areas of each to totally avoid, but neither he nor anyone he knows (including the person who told him about it in the 1st place) can tell him which are the good areas to live in (for a 21yo straight fairly-sheltered-until-now caucasian male) or which are the areas to avoid. Without meaning to insinuate any racism, if anyone is familiar with the NT, could you let me know if this is true and if so, can you recommend any places he could start looking? Thanks all. I know it's not a photo question but I'd really appreciate any help or advice you can give to him, as he "leaves the nest" for the first time - the rest of us will be here to put his mother back together again! Well bad areas......hmm let me think. There are none that I can really think off. If you buying a house or property its a differnt story. Areas make a huge difference, but if his renting there are only two places.
either near the City or the Northern suburb ( casuarina) local uni and the major shopping centre that everyone goes to, hospital around the corner so its pretty good. Or and outer part call palmertson 15mins away from the city. This is considered far for us Darwin people. placees there are new and rent is cheaper cause it the outerpart of Darwin. Places to avoid is Gray, Moulden. Anywhere around town is good, heaps of places to rent, as his young I would assume the city would be more his choice. Like any place if you walk around at night in the early hours of the morning by yourself and your unlucky you might get bashed. Need anymore infor let me know...its very general but Darwin is a pretty safe place besides the gangster wannabes Ben Yu

I agree with Catcha's assesment of Darwin. Mind, I have spent a total of about 1 year living there. I normally live and work in remote areas.
I like the Rapid Creek, Nightcliffe, Casuarina areas. Relatively quiet and an attractive place to live. If he is a red blooded young fella, the foreshore can be attractive place to spend a bit of time in the evening. Otherwise the newer parts of Palmerston. I spent a couple of months at Coolalinga which is just outside of Palmerston. Alice Springs I do not know at all. I order a lot of stuff from there including the weekly shopping, materials for work, but that is about as close as I get. It is otherwise a fuel stop on the way to Adelaide. Cheers
Thanks very much for the advice Guys. Really appreciate your responses, which I will forward on to John (that's him) for his consideration.
And I suspect that he is probably a little more "red-blooded" than his Mum knows about! So, perhaps the foreshore will be an attractive option. Thanks again! I was talking to a work mate and his also a pilot flying those smaller planes also a beginner . I ask him why he was still working at the casino, as he could be flying planes for a living. Answer was there is also a shortage of jobs in the Darwin and his on a waiting list to be called up for jobs. don't know if this helps or not ? But its something to pass on to John Ben Yu
