The Nikkor has impeccable image quality, and it ought to - costing about as much as the D70 itself.

Very sharp, very fast focus (much snappier than the AF-S motors of the 18-70, 24-120, etc) the same calibre as the 70-200. Compliments each other perfectly - if you have deep enough pockets.

Nikon AF-S 17-55mm/f2.8 IF ED DX Lens AU $1800.00
Nikon AF-S 28-70 D/2.8 AU$2000.00

Those two lenses combined with the 70-200VR and a couple of primes would most likely complete ya lense kit. The three lenses I'd go for prime wise would be the 50/1.4, the 85/1.4 and the 105/2.8 macro. Guess I've got a fairbit of saving to do just yet

Yeah I was also thinking about the 12-24VR but I don't really see much point of going below 17MM. Although ultrawide fisheye lenses can provide some funky shots, especially when used in CBD areas. However for my style of photography I can get away without them I think. The ones I listed would cover everything from landscape, portrait, still life, macro etc.

It's not a VR lens, it's DX though. Nevertheless I wholeheartedly agree with your saving sentiments!

The AF-S 28-70/2.8 is a legend/ a gem and rare lens of Nikon, HKG tried to source it for few months now but not to available, it's similar the value of 28-/1.4 and it's a standard lens not DX, super fast in AF, sharp tack as razor and it's expensive, price I got this morning same as the 70-200VR.

Very popular in European market and well sourced around the world, it you can get new under Aussie 2K somewhere today you're a lucky champ! it's price will be over $2800.00 later due to the limited or stop in production from Nikon.

Prices on the list is upgraded time to time, and please use it as a guide.

I doubt it, this lens is very costly and well made by Nikon as "full metal jacket" and mainly used for the super Pro or PJ due to its cost.
The new generation of Nikon lens are full or half plastic, Dx and G lens.
So if Nikon stop its production on this AF-S 28-70/2.8, this version of lens will become rare and its premium will jump same as the 28/1.4.
If I have one brand new 28/1.4 today, I can sell it over AU$3k, I have few buyers chased me in the last few months.
To replace it in the new generation of lenses, them it'll become small, light!
Same as the way Nikon has the AF-S 17-35/2.8 and AF-S 17-55Dx/2.8. Quality might not be all the same.

I had read about, and fallen in lust for this lense - before my D70 purchase. It is big, bold, beautiful and fast, but if your not used to holding quality glass don't bother. Photography, is a little like golf. The equipment doesn't make you better, but it does remove an excuse for suboptimal performance. When this lense is on the camera, you should be long past queries about exposure controls, and totally focused on what is in and out of the viewfinder. This lense is a Nikon legend. When your ready - get one.
