Any NT Members out there?

Really not sure where to post this topic, and apologies that it's not actually a photography question, but I'm hoping the good graces of the Mods will prevail.
My best friend's son is just completing his Pilot's training and is heading off in August to live and hopefully find work in either Darwin or Alice Springs, as he can't get work flying here in the City. Trouble is - he knows nothing about either town and has been told there are certain suburbs / areas of each to totally avoid, but neither he nor anyone he knows (including the person who told him about it in the 1st place) can tell him which are the good areas to live in (for a 21yo straight fairly-sheltered-until-now caucasian male) or which are the areas to avoid.
Without meaning to insinuate any racism, if anyone is familiar with the NT, could you let me know if this is true and if so, can you recommend any places he could start looking?
Thanks all. I know it's not a photo question but I'd really appreciate any help or advice you can give to him, as he "leaves the nest" for the first time - the rest of us will be here to put his mother back together again!
