Broadband shakeout

There's about to be some significant movement in the Oz broadband market.

For those in NSW but not yet on Broadband, Exetel (one of the ISPs I use) have just announced a new entry level plan for new users - $25/month, 1500/256, 500MB downloads, $3GB excess downloads.

http://forum.exetel.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=2211&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

will give you some background into what's about to happen.

That will send the industry into a further round of price cuts in the lead up to xmas hopefully...

On the other hand, I hope they don't pull a TPG - announced generous data allowances for cheap and overnight changed their minds while having many locked into long term comtracts.

A colleague just hooked into the TPG plans last week, and from what i saw, they actually didn't look too bad.

Having said that, the new Exetel plan looks even better.

For me the exciting part is that it looks as though - finally - we may start to see some fast speeds here, with mention in that reference of 8MBs being tested by Helstra. Obviously cost would be a factor, but I'm certainly willing to look at a faster connection as and when it comes on stream.

In other broadband news - I got Unwired broadband! I simply went out and bought their modem, plugged it all in, setup the software CD, signed up, rebooted, system restore cos it failed to detect new connection, setup using CD again, and now it's all fine and dandy. ;)

So glad to get rid of dial up... Incidently, if anyone wants a free unlim dialup account with TPG, PM me - mine's still active till 21 Jan 2005.

I'm glad I'm an exetel user. Have been using this for several months now.

It's a pitty the new plan is only for the new members.

Primus have released there new fast 6Mpbs broadband packages (minimum connection speed would be 2Mpbs)
There two new plans are available;
$29.95 per month plan with 400MB of downloads
$49.95 per month plan with 12,000MB of downloads
Only certain exchanges are working at this stage with more due next year.
Primus have actually laid new cable so your not using the Telstra ADSL copper lines, which explains the faster speed.

I use this ISP:

http://adsl.internode.on.net/pricing/home.htm

and on this plan:

HOME-256-Standard $49.95 256k / 64k 16 GB Shaped

Also believe that they have spread their wings interstate.

Cheers,

Yes.

This was reported on Whirlpool.net on Friday last week, but the list of enabled exchanges is very small.

But my recollection of iPrimus is that they don't provide static IPs, (or at least not too readily) and that they will also block certain ports, thus making their services unsuitable for those who wish to run servers.

That's not to say that, for an ordinary surfer, it's not going to be just fine.

Of course, my recollection may well be wrong, or iPrimus may have changed their policies, but the bottom line is that it's only getting better for the mug punter.

Well that is pretty crap in comparison :) I think I'll be sticking with my cable connection.

All ...

This thread is not going to become a "my connection's better than your's" pissing contest I hope ...

The original purpose was to advise you of some upcoming changes in the DSL market; let's try to keep it to the point.

Thanx.
