Just a short note to let all of you know, especially with 70-200 seekers.
The Sigma 70-200 with Nikon mount is a big demand in HKG after during the shortage of the Nikkor 70-200VR.
So be patience, HKS will try to get more stock by the end of this week or early next week.
We will see what's happening, its price may also up due to the big demand, price has not been changed yet as of today but could be if supplies are not healthy.
Stay tuned!!!!!

Thanks for the advance warning Birdy!
Hopefully the stock situation won't be as bad as the VR problems.

I am just abit concerned about the quality of the Bokeh it doesn't look very circular smooth and creamy

but i need to see the bokeh on the nikon 70-200 2.8 to really tell... I don't have access to either of these it's hard to tell

what's the price

anyone have any idea how the new 'DG' version compares with the older non-DG version ?

Is it basically the same lense with different lense coatings, and how much does it actually affect image quality?

Cheers

Justin

MHD & Sirhc55 have the Sigma 70-200 but haven't seen anyone attended to the meets in the past with the Bigma. Sigmand Chairman will be at the mini meet on Saturday with his arsenal

Thanks for keeping us informed Birddog - i was starting to wonder why i'd not heard from HKS but figured the Nikkor shortage may lead to a Sigma shortage.
Still hopefuly they'll be in for the weekend, fingers crossed they have one available for me, then its fingers crossed it arrives for Sept 30th.......

Ref the coatings question - dont know the exact details but i am lead to believe (from a canon user - seems this issue affects them the most!) that if you buy a new model camera body that does not communicate with your existing lens they have certain obligations to modify the lens so it will work, for little or no charge. My understanding is that obligation only goes back as far as one or two incarnations of any given lens model - introducing the DG, simply a coatings upgrade allows claimed benefits but also introduces another variant of the model, thereby limiting upgrade liability.

Absolutely no offence to Scott it is a very nice capture but in that photo the bokeh looks abit messy but that could be because of the high ISO400 setting and the distance from the bird and the background, nice differential focus is achived when you are close to the subject and the background is further from the subject.

I bought a 70-200 DG today on the spur of the moment at Georges in Sydney. I have taken about 100 photos. Even hand held most are very sharp. Will take for a better test run over the next few days. Initial shots are very positive. There seems to be quite a difference in price between older stock and the newer DG version.

What does the DG version do that he D doesn't. Should I steer clear of the D second hand in favour of the DG? Anyone have any idea what a D type would sell for 2nd hand?

no offence at all!
A few reasons why the Boke was not pleasing:
* Yes, iso 400 in low light (underexposed as well)
* The background was harsh to begin with... messy looking structures unless totally out of focus will still produce harsh looking OOF backgrounds...

Take a look at my other testing post where I shot the indigo Australus ...

I think DG means digital glass. It is supposed to be better for flare or something for digital cameras but I dont think it would make any real difference. The other change on the DG version are the rubber grips on the barrel which now have continuous straight lines instead of the standard ...I cant think of the term (square or rectangular 2.5mm profile)

The case that comes with the lens is superb which is another item that you may not get when purchasing second hand. The guy at Georges where I bought mine said he would update my warranty from 1 yr to 2 yrs if I brought the receipt in before the end of the first year. I realise this is a sales ploy but it works for me.

I wish I had more time to play with this lens today as it is such a great day.

Regards

Peter Mc

DG basically means a AR coating on the final element to stop reflection from the CCD affecting the image
