Smugmug link generator

Hi all,

Just before Chistmas I signed up on Smugmug and was looking for an easy way to make links to images. I'd seen thaddeus' Zoomomator, but I'm too lazy to hunt and find a link to each image to supply to it.

So I put together a cgi script to do practically everything for me. You can find it here.
Just give it your smugmug nickname and it will give you a list of your galleries. Once you've selected your gallery it will give you code you can cut and paste into the forum. Here's an example.

Would other Smugmug users here find this useful? Any suggestions or feedback?

Share and enjoy. :D

That's brilliant.

Works a treat too and makes posting so much easier.

Well done and thank you.

One thought, although it's easy to change the last S to a Ti for a thumbnail sized link, it would be nice to have that option as well. Not that i want to be greedy and give you work to do. I can easily change the filename anyway myself, it only takes a few seconds.

EDIT:
Just made this post so you can see what i mean.

will it work on a mac......???

This is good, but for me has the same failing as what Russel's zoomerator had and that is that it's a multi step solution. Ideally I'd be able to just right click a pic and end up with the code I want on the clipboard. Now I know this can't be done seamlessly except by SmugMug themselves, but it's the remembering steps that do me over - like getting to your link. That said this is definitely easier than Thaddeus solution (sorry Russell)

Thanks for the feedback.

Should do. I can't test it, but it should work on any web browser. PC, Mac, Linux, Unix, etc. :)

Someone could write a tool to do that, but you would have to do one image at a time and it would be specific to the web browser and platform.
You could probably get it down to two steps with a bookmarklet (in Mozilla/Firefox) and zoomerator.

Wow, you like 'em small don't you.
I'll see what I can do about adding some more options.

Wow, you like 'em small don't you. Shocked

Just give them enough to make them curious :)

But as i said, it can be done manually anyway and i don't want to appear lazy. I have no idea how to write scripts otherwise i would offer to do it for you.

OK I have updated my Smugmug Link Generator.
For those of you who want their diminutive image linking to their full glory  , you can now select what size of image to display. You can also now link to the smugmug page which has the Large image on it if you want.

Let me know of any bugs.

That's alright. I should be useful for me too, and it was a good first try at web coding.

Daniel, this is the best thing ever (for a Smugmug user). Makes it just so easy to post from Smugmug. I kept forgetting the sequence or url and img and it made it just too hard to post thumbnails with links.

Thanks heaps for this.

Cheers

Bug in the script?

Hi Daniel,

This seems to be a useful tool. My smugmug nickname is jc-studios and the script seems to ripped off my dash and could not find any album. :o Is this a problem with the script or it is a limitation of the script language? Too bad I can't use it now.

Hi jc,

jc-studios wrote:My smugmug nickname is jc-studios and the script seems to ripped off my dash and could not find any album.

Whoops  Sorry about that. I was filtering out hyphens. It should work now. :P

The gallery names look a little odd due to the extended characters you use, but it all seems to work fine.

FYI, I have just added a new option to the link generator to enable you to link to the Light Box. Now Smugmug has added the Auto mode to the Light Box it is quite useful. Here's an example.

I've recently updated it to support the security change they have just introduced. It appears to be working fine but it something stops working, someone drop a message in here.

Before I forget

from memory i remember reading on the smugmug website that if you made any useful applications for smugmug you got a free pro account for life!

http://blogs.smugmug.com/don/2007/04/20 ... evelopers/

In case you havn't asked them, maybe you should.

Thanks Chew.
I did know about that, but never thought about it in relation to the link generator. I'm not actually using the Smugmug API (just the RSS feed). But I probably should rewrite it use the API instead.
Maybe I'll email them and see.
