Home made ring light (ring flash clone)

Hi there, I am a new member and just before I joined I wrote this tutorial (step by step) on how to make your own ringlight using stuff from around the house and a quick trip to the hardware store. Might be handy for macro and fashion photographers. Just follow the link to read all about how I made my first ever ring light.

Welcome to the forum Rob, interesting little project for lighting on the cheap, I'd be keen to see some more examples at the end of the unit in use, also a few more shots taken with it (perhaps with and without it? - before and after shots?) Just a few friendly suggestions.

Matt, isn't that just mains wiring? I wouldn't think it'd be illegal to change a power plug on the end of your toaster, for example....

And about as enforceable as our copyright laws regarding the taping of TV shows are.

Hmmm fair enough, I thought it was just mains stuff.

Thanks for the feedback all, I'll drop back with some further posts with comparison shots in the future for sure.

RE: the electricals, read through and you'll see a mate of mine who's the electronics genious hooked up the wiring for me, and if you don't have a mate like him, the guy at the light shop will do it for you for sure. Keeps us non electrician types out of the wiring and we can just make the box and whatnot.

Nope its any electrical wiring,


The crazy thing is legally, I as an electrician cannot wire my own house, replace a plug top or do any wiring without getting an electrical contractor to check and sign off my work. Which I think is a total load of crap.. But thats another argument.

If they really wanted to stop people doing there own stuff, you wouldnt be able to purchse a plugtop or power point from WoolWorths.

But i have seen people wire their own extensions and wire the lights in speaker cable , they wonder why I refuse to help...
