Takumar 500mm lens

I was given a a bag of Pentax gear over the weekend, including several lens and various other bits and pieces, most in very sad condition, but it included a 500mm f4.5 telephoto lens.

It sure is one big mother, weighs in at 3.5kg, it will fit my Spotmatic so I am after some info re this lens.

It has been kept in its original carry case and appears to be in reasonable condition, lots of dust as can be expeted so I intend to get it serviced, so if anyone can recomend a technician preferably in the Sydney area that would be great.

And if anyone has experiance with this lens any tips etc would be a great help.

Thanks Rick

Hi Rick,
Congrats on the find =) " I believe there are three versions of the 500mm f4.5. The Takumar 1:4.5 500 from 1965 to 1971 (possibly single-coated). A Super-Multi-Coated 1:4.5 /500 from 1971 to 1975 (the end of the Pentax screw mount) and the current K mount Pentax 500mm f4.5 after 1975" Close focussing is the limiting factor at 10m. Oh it usually has a rear 49mm filter which may form part of the optical formula. quoted with changes from:

Some sample pics from the K mount version?

Thanks for the links, the lens is the original (not SMC) screw mount I did a quick search and came up with some info, however the Pentax part no does not seem to fit, on the lens it starts with 356, and the lists I came up with show a no starting with 365? maybe a typo error. It also neds a new tripod foot tightening screw.

Any way it should be fun if I can get it serviced and in use, from what I have seen so far it should be capable of producing pretty good shots.

Thanks
Rick.

No problems Rick, be interested to see examples from this lens on the spotmatic so don't forget to post some :)

On a side-note would be even more interested in seeing how the lens performs with an image-stabilised pentax DSLR body (manual-focus IS lens :)
