Hi guys,

I have posted this before on DPReview, but seeing as I am a photographer from Melbourne, I thought I would repeat it here.

This tip is very Australian - making something out of what you have...

Basically instead of using an expensive ring flash for close ups, you can use a A4 piece of paper, and the built in flash. You do need either a macro/close up lens. Enjoy.

They are great Be nice to see those printed in a collage type of thing. At this stage I only have the kit lens and 700-300mm lens. Something to look forward to definately. Cheers,

Fantastic Dave - Aussie ingenuity for sure! I can just picture you now - being a pro photog, turning up to one of your clients with this 'softbox'. I'm sure they'll be impressed.

I'm impressed. That just so simple and obvious but few would have thought of doing it. Brilliant idea and it certainly shows the ingenuity of it in your photos too. They are fantastic.

in reply(s) - the lens for all of these is the 60mm F2.8 D macro lens, now my oldest lens, being the sole survivor of 2 burglaries. (happened to be outside the bag on both occasions) Great little lens - not as much working distance as the 105 or 200, but sharp as can be.

I haven't needed to pull this rig out in front of a client yet, this is more for quickie muckaround shots when I don't feel like getting out the SB-800 and a truckload of clamps etc. And bugger them, they pay me for results, so who cares what it looks like

Bigger is better is not my mantra for cameras - I replaced my beloved F3 with an F90. It was just a box to put lenses on. Of course digital screwed that philosophy, and now the body matters a lot. I got a D70 simply because Nikons lineup right now is a bit skewed, with their cheapest body having the highest resolution. A real no brainer for the price. Having said that, I will be first in line for a D2x, but that is because I want to retire the 'blad and the 4x5".

The spider shot is a mistake - I didn't mean to include that one in this post - it was a simple hand held daylight shot, no flash. (it ain't windy until you try handheld macro) But as you can see, this one was not quite a commie - voted Green for sure. (leg hairs that long? It's obvious)
