I couldnt see this posted elsewhere... so here goes-

It's basically using a laser beam as a trigger for the shutter release. Focus where the laser beam is and then go near some flying insects, as they break the beam the camera takes a nice in-focus macro shot of your flying insect.

Omg, I just read further. I think he's used MLU plus an external shutter? Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't read anything about MLU yet but if he's using an external shutter wouldn't he have to lock up the camera mirror/shutter?
