Hanging out with a professional athelete

So I did my shoot on Saturday in the beautiful town of Canmore. It's about 45 minutes west of Calgary. It turned out to be a beautiful summer day. The athelete I shot was Andrew Ference. He's plays for our beloved Calgary Flames. That would be ice hockey for those who don't know. Our team during the last season made it all the way to the cup final and lost in the 7th and deciding game, but lost. Our team was an underdog from the beginning and battled hard all year. Anyways, Andrew invited me to hang out with him for a day and watch him workout. Instead of doing usual treadmill, jog or stationary bike, he'd rather walk on stair rails that lead up the side of a steep mountain slope, sprint up stairs and run across huge river rocks. He basically does this 6 days a week to keep fit for the upcoming season. He's an impressive athlete and hanging out with him was a privilege.

Anyways, the shoot turned out ok. I am my worst critic, but it was hard shooting him cause he kept moving and I couldn't setup any nice angles. But I am invited back anytime to hang with him again.

Johnny - great stuff and well done - looks like your nerves held out! cant be easy photographing someone who also sounds to be a bit of an idol where you are

for me, the 2nd shot is a standout - brilliant i could see the footwear manufacturer using that as an advert.....dynamic shot. great athlete, great light, the great outdoors - all the aspirational elements that ad execs love..

great shots, also loved the shots on the web site, especially the last one, where he is running across the bolders. You did a good panning job on that one, he's sharp while the background is blurred, showing you that he is moving fast.

Canmore is a great place for a shoot, lived in Calgary for 5 years, it would have been hard to keep up with him. Were you carrying a lot of gear with you?

Great shots but I don't like the frames...they detract too much from the actual image itself.

I wasn't sure if I liked them either. But I only use them for internet presentation.

nice work, I'm sure he will be more than happy with those shots. You have definately captured what you stated in your original post, to capture where he is in his life now. You got good shots of him, doing his thing, in absolutely BEAUTIFUL surroundings. Make sure he shows them to the boys, you may have more clients real soon!
