I have not yet played with pin-hole photography but I have an artist friend who does in all sorts of unusual ways and the results are nothing short of sensational. Some of the devices he makes as cameras are equally as bizarre as this magazine cut-out number. The central cardboard tube from a toilet roll is a popular choice of his. He mounts a pinhole aperture (they are brass and can be purchased in varying focal lengths for different sized images) on one side and places a curved piece of 4x5 film in the tube opposite the aperture and makes the tube light tight. The shutter is nothing more complicated than a flap of thick card taped over the pinhole which is removed by the digits (see, the whole world is digital) for the duration of the exposure.

In fact there is a global Pinhole Photography day held each year. It is worth searching Google for it.

Anthony Browell has just had a show at the Michael Nagy Gallery in Paddo where he showed pinhole images of nudes shot onto paper negatives.

Another fine pinhole specialist worthy of investigation is Tom Baril (formerly printer for Robert Mapplethorpe) who shoots flora, seascapes and cityscapes with a pinhols camera using 24 inch x 20 inch paper negatives. Invariably he makes Platinum/Palladium prints and the combination of pinhole imagery with the extreme tonal range and glow of Platinum printing makes for a really special experience.

PINHOLES are available mounted into camera body caps for most popular marques (including Nikon and Leica) and there would be nothing to prevent someone trying some pinhole capture on a DSLR - in fact, it might be one of the first things I try when I make my move in a week or so. Didn't Glenn or Mark have a crack at it recently?

 LOL... Sorry - I didn't mean to be critical... I actually thought it was a lot longer ago than that... Glen's results were not too good, but as Gary said - I suspect his hole was too big
