And the Canon 20D will go into history now with 1.6x cropped factor.

No wonder why Nikon are making the D200 12mp
The price is interesting though at $4399AU (roughly based on conversion and the nearest $99 mark ). Personally this makes me feel like Nikon will make their D200 maybe around $3.5k. At that price it's a significant gap from Canon and would probably get a few swingers. Last edited by kipper on Mon Aug 22, 2005 9:48 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Save up for it mate! you'll be surprised. And FF to follow soon, I wish! Birddog114

Well it appears that all the rumours were correct. Obviously a deliberate leak from Canon. Let's hope that Nikon have been running similar "leak marketing" with the D200 (except for the price )

This is great news, bring on the D200

You saying, that you have on good authority, the D200 is going to be full frame with no crop factor? Or are you saying the next body after the D200 is? Darryl (aka Kipper)

Am I the only one not hoping the D200 is full frame?

Oh has anybody heard of the Canon 1D MKII N? Apparently it's going to use the same cmos as the 5D, so only 12MP but will have: 13.3 fps with 40 JPEG/21 RAW buffer 1/10,000s (1/500s x-sync) 6400 ISO in H Fullframe Fire up that rumour mill Darryl (aka Kipper)

Nope, same 8.2mp as before, basically it's what we in the Nikon world call an "s" update. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0508/05082208canoneos1dmkiin.asp If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
The 'White Paper' is certainly impressive, and written by a marketing department no less! Reminds me of a Dilbert cartoon.

kipper, I don't say that way and I don't have any authority to announce anything as yet! though, thru a workshop & presentation last week, I learned something new from Nikon, and September is their time frame to announce, the way of both camps are heading FF with no crop factor, now or sooner we all see they have two lines parallel running in both DX and FF for two difference level of users and field, surely, the FF is on their agenda, but don't know what's the fate of DX. You can see it's not so many DX lenses announced in the past or just for the entry or intermediate level, and I doubt about Nikon will introduce more glasses (DX) into the Pro's field in the near future. Perhaps Sigma will, but like Tamron, they are not specialized and solely used for DX or with cropped factor bodies. Sleep, eat, enjoy, shooting well until then! Birddog114

Yep, I'm not particularly worried about full-frame either.
I would suspect that Nikon might stick to APS-C, and leave FF to Canon as a way of differentiating. Eventually the sensors will be good enough that being FF is a waste, making you haul around 50% more glass than you really need to take good photos. D70s, 18-70, SB800, Nikkormat FTn, CP4500, Sigma 70-300 APO DG, Sigma 135-400 APO, Lensbabies 2.0, Brian's Hot Tub, Lack of talent, etc.
Gotta admit that Im with Kipper and NikonUser on the crop. Yes, you could manually do it in PP instead, but thats a pain. I wonder if they will have a 1.5x (or even 2x) HiSpeed Crop mode on a FF like the D2x has?
Smile; it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
Hmm... interesting form factor...
It does not look like an expensive camera... just looks like a 20D... FF to me is no big deal... as has been said I like the crop factor... as in general long glass is more expensive than short glass and it dramatically improves any edge effects on non-DX glass (ie a lens that was known for being soft at the edge is soft no more) To be honest I am not that thrilled... 3fps.. and look at that, no AF assist (but having no flash is no big deal...) I just really dont understand where this fits in the market... I guess its for all those people who want full frame.... I guess we wait and see the results of noise tests etc before we know how good it is... New page

I can remember when 3fps was a really big feature. The advent of autowind, on film bodies, is a concept that's just 15 years' young. Most of my bodies are fully manual in this regard, and in fact can be used fully mechanically, without even bothering to be concerned about this new-fangled idea of battery life.
I'm expecting this to be somewhat good, and were I looking at acquiring a second system, but for the anticipated price, this would certainly be a prospective starting point. I would dearly like for the ability to use my 24 f/2.8 as a 24 again to be more than just a nice thought for me .... And all things being equal, 12MP FF should be nicer than 12MP DX ... Mind you .... While I'm expecting the D200 to be 12MP and be a lobotomised D2x, so too I'm expecting the eventual replacement for the D70 to be a D70 enhanced to include the sensor and focussing technology from the D200. Where does that leave Nikon? They've stated that the DX sensor is good for 24MP; that suggests to me a D3 with a 24MP DX sensor, but not for another 14 months, and then a D3x with a 50MP FF sensor, perhaps with a DX crop mode similar to the crop mode we see in the D2x g.

A FF camera has its place, especially for those with the glass to hang off the front of it. Whilst I enjoy my 1.6 crop factor on the telephotos lenses, I do understand that whilst I might be getting nearly the FOV of 600mm lens out of a 400mm lens, I am not getting the same resolution that a true 600mm would give. There has been the odd occasion were the 15mm wide angle lens on the 300d was not wide enough...
What it does prove is that there are now a lot of choices for those who may be wanting to upgrade and as per usual it comes down to individual needs and cash flow. You could buy a 20D and some decent glass like the 70-200 2.8 IS for the same price as the body of a 5D or for a few hundred dollars more, the 1Dmk2n, if you needed high fframe rate, pro body and at least 200,000 shots out of your shutter. Each to their own and ultimately as long as they are out there using their tool of choice, I say good luck to them as all digital slr cameras these days are capable of producing some outstanding results... Canon
Just a thought here, if Nikon does launch FF, wont all the people who bought Sigma 12-24 lenses be laughing Now a real 12mm, that's wide angle

Bob, I assume the Canon 5D would normally be sold for much less than RRP? I hope Nikon has to be more price competitive than $5.5k

That's usually the case isn't it? And yes it is to be hoped street prices are far lower, from the Canon as well as the Nikon perspective.

5.5K is getting real close to the cost of a D2X

When you consider that Maxwell have a rrp of $7,999.00 on the D2X one would assume the 5D will sell for around the $4k to $4.5k mark. This is, again, assuming a similar discount structure
