I'm going with Stubbsy's wonderful image of the moon with the jet going past as this week's selection.

I think that despite the focus issue, this image works as it is; it's creative, it's timing, it's absolutely a decisive moment, and it's a tough shot to get no matter what the circumstances.

Well deserved, congratulations!

I said my piece about the shot when it was initially posted but I would add that the focus issue may be negated somewhat with the inclusion of another layer of hsarp material such as a window frame or curtain to give the impression that we are seeing the moon and plane as a chance event THROUGH something else.

I say this in the most sincere hope that we have another cool, calm and collected series of posts for this very worthwhile POTW.

I think this is a pretty cool shot Peter and the focus doesn't bother me at all. It's the timing that does it. The jet trails are cool as well.

Nice timing Peter... As Matt said, the heat distortion of the edge of the moon adds something to the shot... The chances of being in that place at the right time must be pretty remote... to time your shot so perfectly on top of that is pretty remarkable...

Also congrats on being the first persion to win POTW twice!!! (at least I think you're the first...)

I was a big fan of this shot, so I'm glad it made POTW.

It still reminded me of a different take on the Batman Spotlight, hanging over Gotham City, (but I guess that's just me)

John - I'm a POTW virgin, but I think there HAS been someone who has been selected twice (maybe Dee)

And as birddog says, he spotted the plane and pointed it out. That makes this our first joint POTW I guess

And technical issues aside, I still think this is a pretty cool shot.

In a perfect world, the moon may have been in focus a little more...however we're not in a perfect world, so the shot (to me), depicts that "snap-shot" in time, and it is impressive that you managed to get the shot off at exactly the right time.

If only the D70 focussed faster, hey ?!?

I'd be interested to hear the story of the events leading up to this shot being taken....

Stubbsy, its the exhaust diffusion that does it for me. Great 'real-world' shot (as opposed to some PP 'creation') and good pick for POTW.

As you say, its a pity about the focus, but thems the breaks.

Only grumble I have about it is that someone dropped a cigarette ash on the negative and burnt a hole in the middle of it!
Is it possible to tone down that landing light a little?

The story of the shot is touched on in the original thread, but in brief:

Last Saturday night I was at birddogs playing with my newly acquired Gitzo 1325 and BH55-Pro ballhead. I had my 70-200VR +TC 1.7 on my camera and was taking some shots of the moon. Birddog pointed out to me that a plane was taking off from the airport and heading for the moon, so I lined up the shot and waited. Serendipitously the plane was on the perfect flight path and distance for the silhouette to work and I somehow managed to judge the right time to press the shutter release (this is the only shot I took). I had been unable to get my remote to fire the camera (battery I suspect) so I pressed the release on the body. I suspect the blur is the tiny vibration of me hitting the button.

The light underneath was a dilemma - to clone out or not. Still insure. If you look at the tip of the rightmost wing you'll also see a red light that I'm happy to leave.

A good example of a decisive moment in some ways (as SS has observed in the original thread) since it's all about the confluence of events.

Congrats - great shot. Who cares that you were lucky!! That's what happens. If the shot had been too sharp then everyone would have said that it was faked (even though you had a witness).

Shame the camera didn't focus but still a top shot. I think you should PP out the light - it doesn't add to the shot.

Focusing the moon and get right focus is not so easy, you should use long exposure and bla bla bla bla..... you know.....

Just one comment other than accepting the challenge. Mic is a man - I was just alluding to some old gender confusion that Marcus experienced with mic some time back. Bad on me for making an in joke like that in public

Stubbsy - bloody brilliant shot - just love the exhaust trails causing the diffusion and, to ech other commetns - pin sharp on not not got the shot, thats what matters so well done that man.

Quick note on your focusing comment in the original thread not perhaps perinent to this image as but closer work (ie not at infinity) - dont forget, when focussing manually the 'in focus indicator' in the viewfinder still works - i also wear glasses and use this method to make sure i'm confident of focus when doing close work / not wearing my glasses.
