A series of images taken at tin city in the Stockton dunes at the weekend. All shots were taken with the 50/1.4. I've tried to capture the bleak feel of the area with these (mostly) desaturated pics. Click a pic for a large image.

Peter - I think the desaturation has worked to yield a bleak feel to the shoot. That bus stop always makes me laugh though :D .

The bus stop had actually been pulled out of the ground this visit, so I propped it up to take the pic.

Great shots Peter.

The bus stop is excellent, I like the DOF you have. And the desaturation is good.

The bus stop is my fav with the shot next to it second.

Thanks Matt. My fave is actually the first one and I didn't desaturate it - go figure!

I personally don't think that you made these any better by desaturating, but assuming that you tried both you liked the desaturated look a little better. Or maybe its the lack of contrast that grabs me...or doesn't grab me rather. There is some rust and some potential in those clouds that don't seem to have been brought to full potetial. Particularly the last one and second to last one (which compositionally doesn't seem to work for me either).

I'd rather see these a little more close up. Looks like you intended to get a little up close with some of them (the sand drift would make a great subject to itself) but I don't think you got up close enough. That said, the bus stop is pretty great. Maybe it's my style, but I'd like to see less of a crop for some reason.

Where Nick's saturation brings separation to the buildings and the sand, your desaturation seems to grey them together somehow.

Dave thanks for the detailed critique. I tried desat since I did the exact opposite on my last visit (thread here)

You're spot on about the close up and, while I did do some close ups, I'd have liked to have done more - save that for next time.

Sadly I have to agree with the composition on the last shot. The person in the distance (Nick actually) just doesn't stand out enough to justify the off centre placement.

Excellent pics from a bleak, pic disadvantaged sandbank. I think your processing is spot on but maybe try this...USM 20/40/0 to give a contrast boost. Make them pop a little more. Images like this generally need kind printing...very large...and careful framing. Then they shine like beacons on the wall. I love the desolation and foreboding implied in these sandscapes.

2 things:

1. How cool is that - Goggle indexes smugmug!

2. You should come along to the visit there on the October long weekend.
